Hello... I see there are lots of problems that get solved here, so PLEASE somebody help me with mine. I use Cucusoft 5.12 to convert avi's to SVCD. I also have an Ace Mega Codecs Pack installed. It's all nice and cosy, until I try to convert using the VBR feature. At some point, between 50 and 80% conversion i freezes on me. Please, somebody, help me! What is wrong with it????????

Who knows what goes on inside "oneclickwonder" apps? As this is a commercial application, the first stop should be their support department...

    I somehow felt that coming...
I have no other suggestion than: Try another method and software. There are many ways using freeware only.

  5. Codec packs are a bad idea. They install too much stuff and create conflicts between codecs, splitters, filters, etc. I recommend you uninstall the codec pack, manually clean up the crap it leaves behind, and install the latest versions of each individual codec you need.

Do your hangs occur with any file or just one in particular?

If it happens with any file your computer may be overheating. Athlon processors often have insufficient cooling. And if you've had yours for years the CPU heat sink is probably covered in dust. Clean it out. And add a case fan or two.

If it happens with only one particular file you probably have a bad file or a bad codec.

OK... i get the thing with the codec pack.... the hangs occur with practicly every avi i give it. i only managed to convert one using vbr, and i almost didn't believe my eyes it did id. however, it was a divx5, the rest of them were all divx3 low or fast motion.
As far as the system is concerned... nope, I wouldn' worry about that... it's a P4 processor, freon cooler. it doesn't sweat it you put a candle under it. my suspicions go with the codec packs too. but i do have to give it some codecs to work with and i have no idea what to install...

Your specs list an Athlon XP 1800.

"freon cooler" -- so you're overclocking your P4? Try reducing the speed back to normal and see if that helps.

nope, not athlon... it's a Fujitsu Siemens Scenic System. It uses a Pentium 4 Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2593 Mhz 512 MB DDR memory and OS XP SP2... no overclocking here... it's just the way it was built, with an integrated freon cooler
