    been trying for months to get a network up and runing Wireless (wify do's not want wires around the house )got a bt voyager 1040in one pc and tryed different pci ,usb ones in over pc(linksys ,bt voyager,and d-link ) and tryed linksys ,d-link ,and belkin routers for cable (in UK Telewest blueyonder)put they lose connection with the modem (surfband sb5100i)every few hours.
    can get them to see each over put not talk to each over (adhoc)and when i do they stay connected for a few mins and you get the pc's to talk ,ping each over fine and see shared files put not internet or internet put no shared files or ping each over .
    also had a person (brother) that networks for a living come to have a look and he says every thing it set right should work (got him stuck).
    the house has plasterboard wall (honycomb )the pc's are with in 20 feet of each over .
    tryed static and dynamic ip's ,dhcp on one put not over and they pick an over network up that's faint?.
    they work happy then wired crossover lead or patch in a router .
    has any one got any idea whats going on or hardware to us has the last lot of hardware is going back tomorrow (16th may)linksys usb network adapters wusb11 ,wireless-b(802.11b).
    both pc are home made and only a few months old no more than 6 months .they worked fine on BTboardband with the adsl BT Voyager 2100 Wireless
    any sugestion please

    It was hard to decipher your message, but I'll give it a shot.

    If you have a PC hard wired into the router (straight-thru, not x-over), set up the router to use dhcp and make sure either
    a)WEP is disabled or
    b)WEP is enabled and all connected PCs have the key

    It may help me if you list the equipment you have in an orderly fashion, like so:

    Router, brand, type, WEP enabled or not
    wireless card on PC 1
    wireless card on PC 2
    etc.

    first pc linksys usb network adapters
    second pc bt voyager 1040 pci
    tryed with wep and not wep
    replaced bt voyager 1040 with linksys usb network adapters on second pc tryed with wep and without wep.


    in passed tryed tryed different router on first pc which lost connection with the cable modem every few hour
    second pc had work fine using the bt voyager 1040 pci when a router was on first pc
    do's this help

    Is there anything that could be interfering with the wireless signal? Microwave ovens and 2.4 GHz cordless phones will definately do this. Perhaps even a neighbor using his could cause it if he was close enough.

    sorted it out now thx for your replys ,got a router that works with telewest and rang the help line to config it right.has the shop said that in order to get it to work on telewest i wounld have to ring the help line for the router so they counld tell me the settings for them has they are differant to every one else,do not now why put it worked .been connected over 24 hours not one thing gone wrong .

    I knew it had to be either router settings or the router itself. Home networking has become pretty painless, especially with good routers in the $25-$50 range. It makes ICS even more useless.
