I read a comment of someone saying that the new Panny recorders (my particular interest is the DMR-ES10 model) no longer do auto-chaptering (like every 5 mins.) on recorded discs, is this true??

Thanks for the quick reply Lordsmurf. I know you haven't been too high on Panasonic recorders in the past, I'm curious if you've had any feedback on the reported improved recording picture quality??

    Excellent filters, terrible recording:

I kept my unit for it's filter passthrough feature. I let better equipment do the recording on the filtered signal.

If you only use the ES10 for SP mode 2-hour stuff for personal use, it's alright. Nothing longer. I'm not overly happy with how it handles luma and contrast, but it's probably not too much worse than using a super-cheap player (same sort of IRE/luma/chroma issues to deal with).

Awesome review man. I've had a Panasonic DMR-E50 for about 2 1/2 years now, and like it for it's reliability (it's a TANK), but picture wise I know there has to be better elsewhere. I was kinda surprised recently when a friend purchased a Philips +R recorder (from 2003), and the LP mode looked ALOT better than the Panasonic's!! I'm still on the fence about what my next recorder should be (JVC or Pioneer?). I just know after all the problems I've had with my Liteon 5005 recorder, you'd have to put a loaded gun to my head to force me to buy anything from that brand ever again...

  6. I tried to test this unit earlier. The tests are not perfect given the limitations related to the web site but you can see for yourself how it fairs against other units as well as standard test patterns and videoclips.
