  2. Could be weak laser, maybe its a DOA that slipped through control. Anyway, what kind of drive is it and whats the firmware version?
Edit: Forgot to ask, does it burn DVDs?

  4. DOA = Dead On Arrival, as in the drive may have already been broken when you recieved it.

You can determine the specific model and firmware version of your drive using several tools, including DVDInfoPro.

  5. If its one of those new low-price Sony, like DWD23, it could be hard to get any help, not many people have them yet and little is known about them still. It could be a problem others have experienced, with Windows or something, lets hope someone can help. For now all i can suggest is to insert one of those disks that dont work and then open DVDDecrypter or DVDInfo to see if they can retrive any info about the disk. If the disk can be read there i would think it could be a problem with your Windows.

  7. Then there is a good chance your drive is broken. I had similar problem with a Nec, first it stopped reading most original disks, so i turned it in, they said "weak laser", and i had to take it back without fixing as it had no warranty. Then later it stopped writing DVDs and also stopped reading burned single layer DVDs. Now it reads only CD and CDR.
