642 is general applying to models from No. & So America, parts of asia etc. 630 is the european equivalent of 642.
642/17 and 642/37 are north american versions, which means that they are equipped with the proper voltage, language menu choices (english, french, spanish), default NTSC for that specific region (No. America).
642/17 was made in the first half of 2004, 642/37 came with an updated software and possibly had a slightly different loading tray. The first 642/37 models originally came with 0531 software which had divx subtitle support although it was so poor that you couldn't read them against bright backgrounds. Afterwards there have been a couple more firmware updates.
1109 firmware update added macrovision which prevents copying to vcr's, also cut the time you can open the tray door by pressing the STOP button on remote to 1 second from 2.
Firmware update 0112 (630 but works on 642/17&37) has a semi-transparent background bar for the subtitles which makes them readable.
