I am thinking about buying a DVD recorder - not the DVD drive for a computer but one to record the occasional show on TV. I have a few questions that I would like the opinions of the folks here.

First off, any reason not to use re writable DVD's to record shows?

There is quite a price range - what are some features that I should be looking for?

Last, do any stations protect the content so you can't record the show? I know this is not an issue with my VCR.

    Thanks,

1.) If it's a program you intend to save, DVD R discs are cheaper than DVD RW dics. 2.) Some standalone players do not like DVD RW discs.

1.) Adjustable video bit-rate so you can "squeeze" in as much quality as possible.
2.) AC3 audio is generally prefered over the other audio formats.
3.) If you expect to do a lot of editing, you might want a machine with a Hard Drive.
4.) Check for compatiblity with your existing disc formats (i.e. VCD, SVCD, MP3 CD, etc.)
A Pioneer or JVC machine should very work well. Others might suggest Panasonic. Definately avoid the "lesser" brands, they are nothing but grief.

None I'm aware of. However this could be an issue with digital signals.

    Thanks,

  4. Some digital broadcasts cannot be copied by a stand alone dvd recorder. An example of this is anything from Comcast On Demand. There are ways to do it, just not with the recorder. Check out the new PCWorld on their website, they have an article on broadcast flag technology. Nyah Levi
