I would like to convert a video in VirtualDub to WMV format; which video compression should I select, or do I need to have some special codec to convert? I want the video small enough so that I can upload it on a website, and I've seen some decent quality wmv files that are low file sizes....

You can't do it. VirtualDub can only output avi output.

I seem to recall someone saying the other day that if you have the Windows Media 9 VCM then you can use Virtualdub to output WMV within an AVI container.

    See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/codecs/vcm.aspx for more details.
    If in doubt, Google it.

But if the player can only work with asf/wmv media, you have to covert the AVI with any of these ASFconverters to the ASF format (which is the same as wmv IIRC)

IMHO it's probably easier if you have XP to just use Windows Movie Maker or Windows Media Encoder, but the point was that it can be done from within Virtualdub with the VCM.
    If in doubt, Google it.

No, you still get an avi. One that just happens to contain WMV9 (fourCC WMV3) video. ffdshow can also encode to WMV3/2/1 and not just to avi, although I am not sure what use a raw stream or OGM would be.
