  1. Hi all,

the subject says it all - I've accidentally quick-erased (with Nero) a DVD+RW with loads of data on it. I got mixed up with which disk was which, and have erased the wrong one.

As the quick erase just wipes the file table (or whatever it's called on a DVD) rather than erasing all the actual content, I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way I can recover the data.

I am aware of quite a few freeware apps that can undelete data from FAT/NTFS hard disks, but have not come across any which can do so from DVDs too.

Please help me! It's so frustrating knowing all my precious data has not really gone but I can't get at it.

    cheers,
    theDruid.

All it did on a quick erase was zap the TOC.
Use ISO BUSTER PRO in UDF mode and you're fine.

    I've done this before too.

I don't know of a free recovery program that will recover this data, but I do know of pay programs which should recover it, if the previous recommendations do not work.
Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

  6. Thanks for the very prompt responses everyone - unfortunately I've not had much luck with ISObuster as of yet.

I'm not on my own machine at the moment, so I can't post screenshots, but when I try the Search for hidden UDF items or whatever it's called, ISObuster scans the whole disc but doesn't come up with anything.

If I try and extract the image, I can make a .tao file which is about the right size for the data which is (hopefully) still on there - 3.6gb or so, but this doesn not get me any closer to being able to recover the files, as the filetable is still blank on the image.

Can you please tell me a bit more specifically what I should be doing with ISObuster to recover the data?

Any other suggestions of software that might be able to do this would also be gratefully received.

    cheers,
    theDruid.

  8. Data Recovery from Blanked DVD+RWs :

This situation is not comparable to a blanked CD-RW and much depends :
    - on the time it took to blank,
    - on the type of DVD+RW writer,
    - on the application
Bottom line : you stand a good chance of being able to recover data with IsoBuster. Just run IsoBuster free and look for the files. If they're there, register IsoBuster and extract them. If the free version can't find the files, the registered version won't either.

IF you don't have too many files, and
IF you can guess what those files should be, and
    IF your data isn't fragmented,

you could use a hex editor on that .tao image and save out segments to files, but it would be a crap shoot, and not at all in you favor. Have had to do similar things back in the ol' FLOPPY days. At least then you don't have as much data to sift through.

    Good luck,

    Scott
