I digitize a lot of old analog video, which I play on a Panasonic AG-1960 or a JVC HR-s9911u and run through a Datavideo TBC-1000. Every so often, I will run across a frame or short series of frames that are, for lack of a better word, "torn." To describe: frame x might have areas where it looks like frame (x-1) is still showing. This is usually accompanied by a lot of interlace-type 'teeth' (if I can repeat this soon, I'll post pics). I am almost certain that the fault lies with the TBC because of the nature of the problem, but is the TBC actually malfunctioning? Could it be a buffer overrun problem? Should I buy a line conditioner? Or is this just one of those things I may have to simply grin and bear? Does anyone else get these types of errors?

Some tapes actually work better without a TBC. Tapes with edge damage for instance. So try patching around your TBC.

Or, it could be the VCR. My JVC HR-S9911 sometimes "tears" the video, while a cheap $50 VCR does not. I don't know enough about the inner working to know why - I just know that it happens.

The sync filters inside the Panasonic ES10 DVD recorder repair tearing errors really well. The only reason I kept it. Use it as a passthrough device only, the DVD recording quality is very mediocre.
