My girlfriend wants me to back up here (3) 8 minute workout dvds onto one playable dvdr. She has an HPa1020n comp, with burner. Software that came with is recordnow, mauvee author producer (sp?)?, movie maker, and I have also, installed dvddecrypter and shrink3.2.

    1. Is it possible to use shrink after decrypter and just cut out the actual (3) 8minute workouts and have them be title1, title2, title3 and then back up dvd and have a compliant dvd?

    2. Would any of the pre-mentioned softwares allow me to create a simple menu that would allow me to choose between the 3 workouts when dvd starts?

    3. If so would I do the shrink stuff first, then have to load the final shrink product into the menu program, to create a menu?

    4. If none of these will create a menu, is there a free, somewhat simple program that will do this.

    5. If you have an easier way to do what I'm trying to do please feel free to enlighten me. Even give guides, or your own step by steps. Thanks...

These are on 3 different DVDs to start with, yes ?

Is each workout an entire chapter ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Yes.
and then back up dvd and have a compliant dvd?
    Maybe...
    2. No

Procedure proposal: (using GUI for dvdauthor, but should work with other authoring progs too)
Use shrink and just cut out the actual (3) 8minute workouts from each DVD and back up each one separately into an own folder.
Use a filemanager and rename the VTS_01_1.VOB file in the first folder to title1.mpg.
Use a filemanager and rename the VTS_01_1.VOB file in the second folder to title2.mpg, same with third folder (title3.mpg)

Download and install GUI for dvdauthor
Set the source to your backup folder(s)
    Drap&drop the title1.mpg, title2.mpg, title3.mpg on the menu background.
    Accept the defaults with OK.

    Click "CreateDVD"
Test the DVD with a soft player (like Media Player classic)
Use the PC's software to burn the VIDEO_TS + AUDIO_TS folders

    DVD with simple menu.

Any program you use to manage files (and folders) like copy, move, rename, delete...
Standard is "Windows Explorer" (I never use it)...

    ok I gotcha.

    Here is what I've done.
    1. Ripped with dvddecrypter

    2. Opened shrink, It showed 4 seperate titles on all 3 dvds. Ex title1, title(2) Title1 (continued) and so on.

    3. Each title was one 8 minute workout, so I just chose the titles from each dvd that I wanted, then saved as ISO, and burned with decrypter.

    4. Dvd plays perfectly on standalone dvd player. Each 8 minute workout is it's own title/chapter so using skip button on remote brings you to next workout.

    5. I didn't create a simple menu because the way the dvd is now is fine for its use. 43 minute work straight through.

    6. My question is about using GUI for dvdauthor to create a menu for future projects. Does it work with VOBs? When you say rename vob to title.mpg, how do I change a VOB to mpg? Do I just rename VTS_01_1.VOB to Title1.mpg? Now what do you mean by set the source to back up folder? Is that the folder where the final shrink product is saved?

    7. Do I have to then rename the MPGs back to VOBs, to have compliant dvd?

  7. Does it work with VOBs?
Yes (most times). Have a look here: https://www.videohelp.com/~gfd/GUI_DVDauthor_eng_07.htm#Notes_to_the_source_material
    Do I just rename VTS_01_1.VOB to Title1.mpg?
Yes. If you have just one VTS_01_1.VOB (and no VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB...) it is sufficiant to rename it. GUI for dvdauthor (GfD) just uses the extension mpg to distinguish between multiplexed material (i.e. mpg or vob files) and elementary streams (i.e. m2v, m1v, mpv).
Now what do you mean by set the source to back up folder? Is that the folder where the final shrink product is saved?
    Yes again. See here:

Do I have to then rename the MPGs back to VOBs, to have compliant dvd?
No, GfD creates new VOBs (with menus) and IFOs in the selected output directory within a new VIDEO_TS folder.

My solution is to use TMPGDVD Author. Just copy the VOBs to your HD, checking the box to save MPEGs to the HD.

Then add all the MPEGs to a project, add menus, author it.

I second the above approach using TMPGEnc Author.

    I third it.
    Rip disc in IFO mode.
    Drop VOB files into TDA.
    Make menu.
    Author.
    Burn.
    Watch her workout.

Their site only mentions a 30-day time limit. I'm sure AC3 isn't included either.

Yep - 30 days, fully functional.

The AC3 plugin is an optional extra.
    If in doubt, Google it.
