  1. Hello. I have a video file that has a .dat extension. I know for a fact that it is a video becuase a while ago (months) I got it to play, but I can't now. I've tried windows media player, winamp and quicktime, as well as installed a wide variety of codecs and plugins, but it still won't work. Can some help me find a program or codec that will make the file work? Thanks.

DAT is an MPEG. In fact, it's USUALLY (although not always) an MPEG from a VCD. It's most likely MPEG-1, 352x240, 29fps with MPEG-1 audio.

Try renaming it .MPG and see what happens.

  4. You can also use CDXA2MPEG (included in VCDEasy) to convert from .dat to .mpg.
