Hey gang,
For a good 2 to 3 years I've been capturing my home videos from my 8mm Sony camcorder to my computer and using TMPGEnc to encode my avi's to mpeg-2 and I always selected "Full-Screen, keep aspect ratio". And when viewing the resultant DVD on our regular tube 4:3 TV everything looked okay.
Now, we have a Canon Mini-DV that records in 16:9 and even though we don't yet have a wide-screen TV I've decided to record in that format any way. My first recording and capture via Fire-Wire (sweet compared to analog capture BTW), I encoded with "Full-Screen, keep aspect ratio" in TMPGEnc and the wife thinks the footage is squished some (people look a little fatter than normal on a 4:3 tube TV).
1. Is this correct and just so because we are viewing wide-screen on our 4:3 TV? or...
2. Do I need to change something during the encoding phase with TMPGEnc, such as a different aspect ratio, perhaps just plain "Full Screen"?
Any help is appreciated.
Lex

Change to "16:9 Display" in Tmpgenc under Video->Aspect ratio. And be sure to author with a tool that can keep the aspect ratio like tmpgenc dvd author.
When you watch on a 4:3 tv you should see black borders. -
Baldrick,
Sorry forgot to mention...when TMPGEnc starts its wizzard, I do select 16:9 and I do see black borders at top and bottom of footage on my regular TV. I can't recall in the advance video properties (somewheres near the settings for CBR,VBR, etc.) for aspect ratio, does the drop-down even have 16:9, I thought it only had things such as Full Screen, keep aspect ratio, etc.?
So I think I may have everything correct but it just looks a little squished, like I need just a bit more video and less black top/bottom borders.
Oh and also I do use TMPGEnc DVD Author to encode my m2v and AC3 (I convert all my wav files to AC3) to DVD vobs etc.
Thanks,
Lex
