It never will be able to see your VCR, but it should be able to see the capture device you are connecting the VCR to. Need a bit more information to be able to help.

Virtualdub use vfm capture drivers and your equipment use wdm capture drivers.
Try the other alternative for capture: VirtualVCR -
I have a Sony Vio that has windows media center for windows xp. It comes loaded with softwares like click to DVD and DV gate.
By the way, I dowloaded smart vcr. Screen remains white and does not pick up the VCR. -

Virtualdub still use warpers to handle wdm on later versions. Those "experimental" versions, don't work on anyone without problems!

I always mess those too words (English is not my native language) -
either way, you are generalizing.
I capture with with VirtualDub using WDM drivers with no problems.
jimmalenko makes a very good point
how is your equipment connected? I'm assuming that your webcam is probably USB, just unplug it.
How is your VCR connected to your video card?
What kind of video card do you have?

On General Questions, you Get a General Answer
You don't answer with questions.
We have a different approach and your irony is not appriciated -
yadoc being you have MCE you have Hardware MPEG Encoder so there for it not going to work with VirtualDub.
