  1. Can someone give me the info on this?
So if I got a DVD-R, exactly what would the complications be in copying one of my DVDs?

Dunno why they're making it so hard. VHS was just as easily copiable, and there doesn't seem to be a huge market for that.

Most dvd-movies are on dual layer dvds(9.4GB) and only single layer(4.7GB) dvd-r/dvd-rw/dvd+rw discs exists (it will probably take a year or two before any dual layer burners appears on the "homeuser market")....so then you have to either split on two discs, use dual sided discs, cut out extras and stuff or just reencode with lower bitrate as with vcd or svcd.

There is an alternative: Two side DVD-Rs...
There was a link for those DVDs, a couple of days ago in this forum, I don't remember where
Plus, movies without extras etc, is smaller than 4.7 Gb.
And always you can rip and re-encode ....

  4. yes please a do search, this is now being asked as much as "Playstation 2 & VCDs", and "can I play a DVD in my cdrom",...bottom line, regardless on size limitations, you CAN NOT make a 1-to-1 copy of a CSS/Macrovision (ie, just about all movies) protected DVD due to media & burner based security measures. You will have to decode/rip the DVD first.

  5. heh.....not always....i believe most porn DVDs and hong kong DVDs aren't encrypted....

on a side note....all these retail "double disc" DVD sets for movies can basically easily fit on a single double-layered DVD or even a double-sided/double-layered DVD....

i.e. pearl harbor could've easily been on 1 DVD, whether dual-layered and/or double-sided...i guess they wanted to have that "cool" artwork on the DVD discs...
