I'm trying to get virtual dub 1.5.10 to recognize my Sony Handy Cam TRV22. The sony came with USB drivers but no firewire drivers. Actually, I'm not even sure if firewire drivers are needed at all. Anyhow, when I select "capture avi" under "file" in virtualdub, I am able to see the camcorder when it is plugged into the usb port. However, when I plug it into the firewire port, virtual dub do not see it. When I plug it into the firewire port, other programs such as premier and windows movie player can detect the camcorder. Any suggestions? Is virtualdub not compatible with firewire? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I know, VirtualDub doesn't capture via firewire from camcorders.
I'm assuming it's a DV cam when I say try WinDV - it's free and very reliable. Your cam will need to be plugged into the firewire port.
If it's video footage - you absolutely definitely want to be using firewire over USB.There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Virtual dub is not compatible with firewire.
You can not transfer the video with your DV cam using Virtualdub.
You will need to use Premier or windows movie maker to transfer the video.
After you transfer the video to your computer, you can use Vdub to edit and whatever else you wish.
The USB on the camcorder is for accessing the memory stick, not the DV tape.
The Firewire is needed to transfer the DV tape video to your computer.
Edit - yes WinDV can be used for captureing from the DV Cam firewire.
If your captureing direct from the DV tape, there shouldn't be any issues. But if you ever use your Sony DV cams Passthrough feature to convert analog VHS videos to DV(and bypassing the tape), then I recommend Premier or Windows Movie Maker to be sure to avoid Audio Sync Issues that occor on some Sony DV cams.
