    Hi guys,

I have a number of mpeg/avi files which all are around 700-800 MB while a cd can take up to 700 MB, is there anyway to get around this, can I shrink CDs as we do DVDs ?

    Please help

  2. You could either overburn (risky), or re-encode them and attempt to lower the bitrate some, you'll loose alittle bit of quality, but if done right, should be able to fit them on to a single cd.

I perfer xvid myself, but its not always compatible with alot of the standalone dvd players out there.

Re-encode at a lower average bitrate.
    Chop some off.
    Overburn/use larger media.
    Burn mode2/form2.

  5. If they are VCD compliant mpegs, you can get ~80mins of video on an 80min CD, thats about 800Mb, not 700, as VCD's are burnt using mode2 which uses less space for error protection.

  6. You can buy some 90min/800Mb CD's, this will require the overburn option to be enabled, in Nero go to the Preferences menu, Expert features tab, and select CD overburning. If you want to burn 800Mb CD's enter 91 mins (this is advised on the TDK website, not sure every brand can actually use up 91 mins).

  7. Do not touch the files. Use mode2CDmaker to fit up to 800 MB avi's in 700 mb CD's.
For playback on computer you will need riff-CDXA filter. For download look at doom9.

    I really wouldn't recommend burning avi's using mode2 form2.

  9. Then you think it is better to re-encode?

    Agreed.

mode2 form2 removes the error protection/correction inherent in the usual CD rom format. (S)VCD gets away with this as the needed error correction data is part of the mepeg stream. Avi's don't have this.

So which do you prefer, fitting your 780Mb avi on a CD with the knowledge that you may never be able to read it back, or losing a little quality due to re-encoding to 680Mb with the knowledge that it is pretty damn safe om the CD?

  11. So far the CD's burnt with mode2 are working (oldest is three years). Some are scratched, but they work also.
The error corection is the same as in AudioCD.

Decreasing the quality is for sure - not avoidable.
About the knowledge that I will never play it back - it is not a knowledge at all as my experience shows exactly the opposite - I am playing it back when I want.
    So?

1st of all, I only said "may" not be able to read it back. I never said it was a certainty.

To me, tha fact that you need special filters to read the data at all is abig turn off. It means you can't use the CD just anywhere, but thats just me. The lower error protection is also something that would put me off.

With the low price of CD and DVD media these days, it just looks like an unncessary risk to me.

You don't have to re-encode to make it not an avi and I was the first one to suggest mode2 form2. I would just suggest using a container that handles errors a little better. There has however been some work recently on error correction for XCD.
