i have a sony vaio pcx-830 (p4/512ram) ... whenever i try to render a mpg my computer shuts off, i used the following apps:

    sony dvd architect
    ulead (movie fact. and workshop)
    tmpgenc
    windvd
    and a few others...

every program shuts my comp down .. about half way during the render ...

i even tried a new hd, and formating the existing, reinstall the programs and re-rendering them .. i haven't had any luck as of yet..

anyone know what might be causing this?

  2. It's probably a CPU overheat. Try cleaning your CPU heatsink.

  3. Could be a memory problem (just a guess) so maybe in bios at boot set the memory speed down a notch and see if that helps.

or your PSU can't handle the drain of processor & RAM intensive operations

or it could be any combination of what I said, what cd090580 said, &/or what Bob W said.

I have this problem as well when running TMGPEnc and occasionally AviUtl.
After researching for almost a year all over the web and on countless forums (PC, gamer, video, you name it), I have it narrowed down to: incompatible/cheap RAM; cheap PSU, unsigned/shitty drivers for my PCI/IDE card.

though I doubt it's the drivers, because when I go into my BIOS and drop the clock speed on my mobo, it runs the 'trouble' programs with no problems at all

either way, you should open your PC and clean it on a regular basis, including(especially!) the CPU heatsink like cd090580 said.

I also have a SOny VAio (PCG-GRZ630). There is a known issue with some models. They have faulty heat sensors and will shut down if the CPU is taxed at all. You might find some insights on the Sony Forums. As far as I know this is a hardware fix that needs to be done. However, I was having the same issue with my own Vaio and I blew it out with some compressed air and have not had the same problem since...I hope this helps

Thank you all for all your help. It was the cpu overheating and the Vaio will automatically shut itself off if it got too hot. I purchased a CO2 cartridge and sprayed my box, and everything works not I just need to look into different products that will cool it Thanks again

  7. There is a free app out there called "SPeedfan"
google it and i think newest version is like 4.20
or something...u can check which is hotter...
the CPU or board...might not work on older
    boards though

Your bios should contain an area where you can tweak the settings , as you might have it set up to shutdown at a lower temperature setting .

Gigabyte motherboards caontain such features .

As for that video problem , you mention durring rendering causes the problem , this shouldnt be heat related , it is more common it is a video desync issue , and might be due to unstable video adapter drivers , or video adapter that isnt performing as it should .

I had this , after 10 hours the monitor turns off and the only way back is too turn the pc off and reboot it .

Replace the card with my original , all fine , so I though before returning under warrantee , I'd test it again .

Only this time it wont do squat , tested it in onther pc , nothing , took the same card from other pc , tried it in mine , all's fine .

And the card wasnt even 5 months old , and is the first time I have seen this happen .

Of course , before this I got the warning "video dysnc accured" ...

  9. Cheapest cooling can be adding more fans and/or buy a new cpu HSF but I'd also check BIOS to see if you can adjust temp. shutoff first.

If you can remove the CPU heatsink to replace it, I recommend the XP-90 heatsink. It is considered the best heatsink without using liquid cooling, and it is light enought to not require a backplate. I cooled my CPU by at least 20F cooler than non-intel HS. I also recommend you set the shutdown temp to about 140F or lower. I burned out 2 MB before getting the XP-90 HS.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I tried correcting the problem in the bio, and it still shuts down. Even with the settings on "Ignore/Bypass". With that being said, all my searchings point me to "CoolerMaster". Since I blew out the dust the average temp of my box is 52C/125F ... Anyone ever use a liquid cooler? Or any type of product like that? When I ran SpeedFan my box (inlcuding my hd's) are cooking. I think liquid cooling is the best way to go? But I would take ANY suggestions... Thanks

I would go with normcar's advice, buy the XP-90 heatsink.Unless your really overclocking then you dont need a liquid cooler.
