Does the resize filter in virtualdub stretch the image? I'm resizing an aspect ratio of 640 x320 to 740x436. I wanted 16:9 instead of 2:1. It looks like the people got skinnier and taller. Is my eyes playing tricks on me?

Do you want 16:9 letterbox or 16:9 anamorphic ?

Try this. After you have added the resize filter, right click on the after window (right-hand window by default), and select 16:9 from the menu. You should see this window get wider, and the people revert to normal size.

16:9 is approx. 1.778:1. Letterbox has the image with black bars and is encoded as 4:3. Anamorphic appears to be stretched in the vertical (although is actually squeezed in the horizontal), and is encoded/authored as 16:9. Playback on a normal 4:3 TV will appear stretched unless the player is set to convert it to letterbox on the way through.

I'm trying to do whichever one will make it look nice on my 15.4" widescreen. And on a normal 36" TV. Those are the places I will be watchin it on. I used your resize calc to calculate the resize numbers. Will doing that right click thing make a difference when I encode it? or is it just for vdub viewing purposes only?

Just for viewing purposes. If you have resized it for 16:9, then encode and author as 16:9. The player set up on the widescreen TV should be set up to send 16:9 through as widescreen. The player set up on the old 4:3 should be set up to send 16:9 through as letterbox. I assume it does this now, as a large proportion of commercial movies are anamorphic, and would look weird if it hasn't been set up correctly.
