NTSC and PAL are standards that define how a video signal is sent to a TV. Basically, the numbers of lines on the screen are different and so is the way the colors are coded in the signal.

Look at this table to see which standards countries use: http://kropla.com/tv.htm.

Most recent DVD players now can play both standards and even convert. For example, I live in the USA and the TV standard used here is NTSC. My DVD player sends the output video to the TV in NTSC of course but it can also read a PAL DVD and send a converted signal to my TV in NTSC, it does the conversion on the fly.

Another thing to be aware of is that commercial DVD's have a code on the disc that tell the DVD player in what region of the world the DVD's are meant to be played. For example, the USA are part of region 1, Europe is part of region 2, etc... A region 1 DVD cannot be played in Europe in theory. But most DVD players especially manufactured in Asia come region free so they are able to play any DVD. There is also the possibility of entering a set of commands with the remote control of the DVD player to make it region free. Take a look in the left column of this web site at DVD Hacks.

What you will have to check too is the difference in power voltages and frequencies. Here in the USA, the voltage on power lines is 120 Volts with a frequency of 60 Hz. In other countries it may be different. In my native country of France, for example, the voltage is 230 Volts with a frequency of 50 Hz. Take a look at this table to check your own country: http://kropla.com/electric2.htm. It is possible to buy adapters/converters if it is different in your country. Some DVD players will be able to operate on both voltages/frequencies without converters but you really have to look.

Consider a true dual standard model (region free) that will play both PAL and NTSC DVD plus optimize playback on either a NTSC or PAL TV. A PAL DVD playback through a NTSC player to a PAL TV (NTSC Mode) may be severely compromized.

I bought the Cyber Home CH-DVD300S DVD player and I found that the movie quality was very bad. Brightness increases and decreases often. I checked with two or three DVD's still i have the same problem. What may be the problem.?

  10. What a surpirse, bad picture on a cheap player? Im shocked. Just the "brand" name alone, Cyber home, makes me wanna trust it with my life
Edit: Means there might not be anything wrong at all, but lets hope it is.

The problem with Cyberhome 300 series is that their quality isn't very consistent. I wouldn't recommend purchasing a Cyberhome without a extended warranty. To play my first DVD on it, I had to go back to the store three times. The first quit entirely. The second played audio for a half hour. This third one has been relatively trouble free for almost a year.

I play all kinds of disks. I have studio disks from Regions 1,2,3,4,and 5 and a bunch of DVD-Rs. Only three disks have given me some problems out of about 250. So that ain't bad.

I also have a Sungale 2026 that I bought for $30. It seems to handle factory disks better than the Cyberhome, but not the DVD-Rs my nephew burns.

$60 is cheap enough to cover all the bases.

DUDE, I got a ******* Sony 1 yr ago, and it sucks, when it switches the layers, sometimes it frezes and jumps. You wanna trust your life to sony ????

If you're stupid enough to pay extra for nothing, go for it, I did it....and I got burned.

Cyberhome works wonderful for me, Sony is a expensive piece of shit.
