  1. I am thinking about shrinking about 12 gigs of vobs to fit on a dvd. I feel this is a very bad idea quality-wise. Could anyone suggest a good proportional compression percentage (ie 30% deduction, 40%, etc) that would still leave a pretty nice quality? I've never compressed video media, and dvd shrink's 'custom' mode allows you to specify whatever size, in mb's, that you please without mentioning anything about quality reduction. If anyone has any ideas, that would be very helpful to me. Thanks in advance.

  2. Use 3 discs? Lower the resolution? Re-encode with TMPGEnc, CCE, etc. rather than transcoding with DVD Shrink.

Going from 12gb down to about 4.3gb is going to result in pure crap. The only way you're going to get viewable results is by lowering resolution, which of course will lower the overall sharpness. 352x480 resolution still has pretty good sharpness, but going to 352x240 is similar to VHS in resolution.

Simple answer: Just use 2 or 3 discs.

There's no magical % you can say is 'THE' datum for acceptable results from DVDShrink, since it all depends on the source, the device you're going to be viewing on, and your definition of "quality".

I'm with steve, and would suggest that two SL discs would probably be ideal - however, if we're talking DL discs, 12GB to 7.95GB might still come out OK, so you MIGHT be able to get away with just the one DL disc. Without knowing your source or viewing apparatus however, it is tough to definitively say that this will be "good quality". The best method here is experimentation, which only you can do
    If in doubt, Google it.
