  1. I have just bought a Hauppauge Win TV Nova USB2 digital TV card and am trying to work out how to get the recordings to divx and dvd. I've tried a few programs but none seem to like the mpg files. What sort of format are they likely to be (UK freeview)? What program will easily convert them to other usable formats without affecting the quality (at least until I want it re-encoding anyway)?

    Thanks.

Try VirtualDub-MPEG2 to open the MPG files and convert them to DivX. You will need the DivX codec.

If you want to create a nice DVD, try TMPGEnc DVD Author to import the MPG files and then you'll be able to do basic editing and create menus.

  4. Get VideoReDo, Womble mpeg wizard, Cuttermaran, et al, remove the commercials.
Get VSO Divx to DVD to author.
If you want menus, TDA or DVDLab.

  6. Thanks guys. I want to keep it as simple as possible, and am not bothered about editing out ads and stuff. It's just for recordings I make and want to chuck onto dvdrw to watch them and want to keep it down to as many steps as possible.

I'll give DVX a go for converting to Divx, but what about to dvd compatible Mpeg? Nero doesn't seem to want me to chuck the files straight into that so I need something to convert it to vobs and create the ifo's, etc.

That's what TMPGEnc DVD Author does.

Remember: If you source is 720/704/352 x 576 you can use it "as is" for DVD Video! Just use TMPGenc Author to import, and ignore the messages about the GOP structure and the bitrate (if pop up)

  10. Thanks, but I don't really want to pay $70 for a program just to convert a mpg stream to a dvd compatible format. I've just tried Tmpgenc (normal) and Spruce Up but neither like the format.

What format is it likely to be, and how can I find out?

I expected this to be much easier than it is (dvd is easier!)

  11. I don't know about UK but in Canada, for the price of your USB TV Tuner plus the price of the software plus the price of a DVD burner, you can buy the lowest end Panasonic standalone DVD recorder (with built in tuner).

Or for the price of the first two items, you can get a Lite-On standalone DVD recorder (with built in tuner).

  12. You can get them pretty cheap bow, but I've got a Tivo and a DVD burner in my PC. The TV card is to give me more flexibility, like using it with my laptop when I'm away from home.

  13. I've just downloaded the Tmpgenc DVD Author trial but when I try to add the mpg file it says it's too high bit rate for DVD and won't go any further with it. I also tried using Tmpgenc to convert it to a dvd compatible format but that doesn't like the filetype either.

I just want something simple and I can chuck the mpg files into and will create the dvd files for me without having to use numerous programs to re-encode, etc them. Any ideas?

Going to try Dr Divx for converting to Divx as my DVD player plays them, but normal dvd format is preferable.

When ever you have a question about a Hauppauge product check out the site http://www.shspvr.com/ I have found it very helpful.

  16. Do your captures at a lower bitrate, so they WILL fit on a dvdr. Author them with ReJig, because it's free.
If it's too large, shrink with DVDShrink (also free).
    Burn.
There's nothing terribly complicated about it.

  17. You need to convert your transport streams to proper mpeg2 streams first (I think)... Look under tools. That was the solution I was going to use(Nova/dec 2000 ),... also how about just burning the mpeg2 files to disk without authoring as most divx players are very understanding about "raw" Vobs and mpeg files. My player plays them fine.
