Having been playing with a Lite-on LVW-5005 a question appeared in my mind.
Given that the Lite-on standalone box can record on the fly straight from an external video source to a DVD blank, what is available to do the same thing on the PC?
I have the video source (say a VCR), a Canopus ADVC-100 going in through Firewire to the PC hard disk, capturing via WinDV or whatever but this produces an AVI file, which I can then happily process with TMPGEnc or similar to produce an mpg file to author to DVD. No problem.
But I can't see any way to do what the Lite-on (and other DVD Recorders) does, i.e. record the video signal directly to the DVD blank in my burner (NEC 3500). I know it removes the opportunity for authoring, but it would save a lot of time for certain applications. I thought Nero6 Reloaded might have done it but it doesn't appear to?
Surely I don't have to splash out on a standalone recorder to achieve this?
Thanks

Ulead's VideoStudio 9 (and maybe some earlier versions as well) can also do a direct-to-disc
EDIT:
oops, I take that back. I just re-read the original post, and I am not sure VideoStudio can capture/burn simultaneously (like a standalone DVD recorder).
Sorry for my misunderstanding.George -
Plextor ConvertX M402U series, now shipping with Ulead VS 8, can do it. I've had success with it, however, I'm now just capping and then authoring before burning. Thhis is because I've grown so fond of Dvd Lab and having menus on my transfered dvds.
It isn't fool proof though- sometimes the Capping program hangs! At that point you'll have a ruined blank disc. New drivers are supposed to be released in 3 weeks.
Your system has the muscle. -
Hey, I found an used DVD Movie Factory CD in my cupboard, it sort of works but still burns from a disc image.
I think I'll stick with my existing system for now, it works!
Thanks
