Would someone please explain to me the differences between Temp folder and Temporary Internet Files folder ?

I went into my Temp folder and found many files (music, pictures, etc.) that I accessed in the past. I thought these files would be stored in Temporary Internet Files folder; and I would use Internet Option tool to delete them.

Is it OK to delete the files in the Temp folder? If so, how do I delete them? I see many useless files in this folder.

    Thanks

The Temporary Internet Files folder is a cache for Internet Explorer. Whenever it downloads something (html page, image, file) it gets stored here. When the space reaches it's limits, the oldest stuff gets kicked out. When you visit a page, IE first checks to see if you already have this page in the cache, and if so, loads it from there to save time.

The Temp directory is a dumping ground for other processes, such as compressions programs. When you open a zip file, it is temporarily unzipped to the temp directory. It should be cleaned up afterwards, but often isn't. This will be why you see a lot of similar files in the two directories.

You can (and should) regularly delete everything in the temp directories (or get something like ccleaner to do it for you). Teh Temporary Internet Files area can be flushed from within IE's Internet Options, however you will notice that regularly visited sites will be slower on the next visit as you download everything into the cache again.

The best & safest time to clean out the TEMP directory is right after a fresh boot. If I go deleting files after the PC has been running for a while, I like to leave items in the TEMP directory that have been created since the last time I booted the PC.

Don't forget that a good defrag should also be part of your routine maintenance chores.

    Good luck!

It's a subdirectory, with multiple folders under it, that IE uses to cache the temp internet files, supposedly for more efficient browsing. On my system (WIN98SE with IE6), all the session cookies are cached under the 'Temp Internet Files' folder, and the actual downloaded files (JPEG's, GIF's, etc.) are cached in the multiple folders under the 'Content.IE5' folder.
