Suggestions on Next Purchase

Hi. I'll try to keep this short. Current Equipment: Canon GL-2 Camera firewire to HP 3.4G, 1GB RAM w/Sony Vegas 6 & DVD Architect. I record weekly church service(~1hr) (direct capture & tape backup), edit & add credits, render, burn to DVD. All is well, I can do this now and do light duplication on the PC burner.

Now I need to duplicate more DVD's (1-10/wk), AND also make an S-VHS copy for local cable. I'm thinking of buying a DVD player/recorder and S-VHS recorder (or combo), for extra burn capacity and to dub.

But I'm wondering if there is a better way to do this: S-Video out of the PC direct to the deck? JVC's SR-MV30U is a combo deck with firewire, but I was told it cannot take PC output. Are DVD decks generally standalone or can they be connected to PCs?

Any suggestions?

I am assuming you mean connecting the DVD Recorder by firewire to the PC ? It is possible, so long as you could make the PC look like a camera. I don't yet own a DVD Recorder as the price of quality recorders with HDDs is still outrageous in this country, so I haven't tried it myself.

I do know someone was trying, at one stage, to do the same thing between two PCs. I don't know if he had success. Maybe a search will find the answer.

I'd just dub to the S-VHS deck through the camcorder (S-video and audio). Or, use a Canopus ADVC-110. It will output 7.5 IRE setup (from DV in) for proper broadcast black level. The cable company may require you to have 7.5 IRE black.

DVD burning in those quantities can be done on any PC or with a DVD recorder with HDD and copy mode. I'd just use the PC.

So now what to buy with the rest of your budget. hmm.

edDV, are you suggesting firewire back to the camera, and immeidately out to the S-VHS deck? I had not thought of that. I wonder if I can do that without actually recording it on the camera? Just use it as a D to A converter , which is what he Canopus unit is correct?

I agree that I can do that level of duplication on the PC. Does the recorder with HDD give me any speed benefits? This setup is not at my house, so I'm trying to minimize my touch-time.

The advantage of a HDD in the recorder is that you can hold a disk image on the hdd and burn as many copies as you need, like a pc.
