I read around on the net (forgot the address, tried to find it) that said that CD's and DVD's without a manufacturing label (like maxell, memorex, etc) arn't that good to use. I'm wondering if that is true?

Not necessarily, but if your vendor doesn't tell you who manufactures the disk, be wary.
A lot of very good DVD-R and +R discs such as Taiyo Yuden, Ritek (OK, that's arguable), Prodisc and Verbatim are sold in unbranded versions some of which have printable surfaces. They are as good as their branded equivalents.
However, the 25/$10 bargains you see are generally poorly manufactured and you generally can't count on them.
The same doesn't apply as strongly to CD-Rs. Even cheap CD-Rs aren't too bad, and will generally work well enough. However, cheap DVDs often have lots of errors during the burn and may not play back after burning. A brand like Taiyo Yuden will almost always result in a good burn, no matter what your burner. -
No there's no truth to that. Great media exists with no labeling at all and Poor media exists with labeling, it means nothing.
