  1. I bought 100 Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4.7GB, 16X, Silver Inkjet Printable blanks from rima.com - Problem is, they're only burning at 4X in Nero. I'm using a Pioneer 108.

I had previously ordered Taiyo Yuden 12X, and they burned just fine at 12X.

Any idea what might be going on?

    Thanks.

Check if DMA is enabled. Go to control panel>system>hardware>device manager>IDE channels. Look to see if all of your IDE channels have DMA enabled.

Also, do a seach for DMA in this forum for more information.

Which version of Nero are you using?

    Hi everyone,

I purchased a 100 pack of Ty 16x dvd-r media @ Rima.com. I have tried them with two different burners in my pc - one is a 8x burner and one is 16x, but the maximum write speed I can get using decrypter or nero 6 is 4x.
    You're not the only one.

  5. Thanks for the reply. Both say "DMA if available" for the "Transfer Mode".

You're missing an important bit of data - what is the "Current Transfer Mode"?

Try seeing if there is updated firmware for your drive. 4x max speed is usually what you get with new media when the current firmware for a burner doesn't have a proper write strategy for them.

  8. Thanks. I think you're right about it being a firmware issue. Rima said the same thing. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a new one available yet. Hopefully soon.

  9. It doesn't really sound like firmware making him burn at 4X, since he was burning at 12X with the previous batch. Although, firmware will prevent you from burning at 16X, you need f/w 1.19 for that.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried using DVD Decrypter to burn? I always burn at 12X with my 108, TY's & Verbat's, using f/w 1.18. But, I also have never had a prob burning w/ Nero, currently using 6.6.0.12

He said he previously ordered TY "12x". I assume he is talking about 8x TY discs which burn at 12x on his burner.

  11. Honestly, I don't remember, and can't find the receipt. They might have been 8x.

  12. Well, firmware version 1.19 added 16X writing, but now there's even a 1.20

Read the media id with DVDInfoPro <-- will also give you drive info, like firmware version.

  14. Okay, my firmware "Revision" is 1.14.

And here's what we're looking at for the media:

    Disc Regions are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
    Media code/Manufacturer ID TYG02
    Format Type UDF 1.02
    Volume Name BUSHIDO_6
    Application id
    Implementation id AHEAD Nero
    Recording Date/Time (mm/dd/yyyy) 4/15/2005 11:49:36
    Format Capacity 3.97GB(4.26GB)
    Book Type DVD-R
    Media Type DVD-R
    Manufacturer Rated Speed 8.0x 11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 12.0x 16620KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 8.0x 11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 6.0x 8310KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
    Write Strategy Speed 4.0x 5540KBps

So, it looks like it was an 8x DVD afterall.

Thanks. I've never done a firmware update on anything before. Any tips? Do I just run the .exe like any other program? Can I jump straight to 1.20 or do I need to do incremental updates?

    Thanks again.

  17. Just download and install DVR108_FW120B.EXE to be up to date with the latest. Too bad there isn't a hacked version for 1.20, or even for 1.19 yet. If it was hacked, you could burn 8X media t 16X.
    Check-

EDIT - actually, there is a somewhat hacked 1.20 http://gradius.rpc1.org/

  19. I just got a batch of white printable TYG03 16x from rima. I was using a 109 with 1.50 firmware. With DVD Decrypter it would get near 16x and finish the image but freeze at the very end and lock the drive up. I think I've got that down to a firmware problem. Evidently 109 with FW 1.50 does not work correctly with TYG03s. I reverted to 1.40 and it burns fine. Maybe Pioneer and TY just don't get along too well.
