I know this is a very common thread but i didn't find a sollution after reading many posts in this forum.
I have an anime video in .avi with these specific characteristics:
Video: Codec Xvid, Frame rate 119.875, bitrate 570680
Audio: Codec Mpeg 1/2 Layer 3, rate 48 kHz , bitrate 132808.
I want to add permanent subtitles(hardsubs). The subs are in .ssa so i tried VirtualDub.
PROBLEMS: When i open the video with Vdub this message appears
VBR audio stream detected
"VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 27312 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the entire audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder (bitrate 132.8+-26.6 kbs)"
I click ok( i used VdubMod and click NO, I had the same results keep reading)
If you click the first play button
the video plays fine and the sound is ok
if you click the second play button[dub in progress]
The sound isn't ok and the video goes much slower than before.
I disabled the audio and made an avi with only the video, so that i could add the subs , and then i would figure out how to join the sound.
I open the file with virtual dub and no problem appeared. If you click the first play button you see the video palying in normal speed, but if you click the second play button[dub in progress] even if there is no sound the video plays slower, if you try to encoded with the subs the result sucks(the video is slow and a lot of frames are missing).
After reading a lot of other topics i tried Vdub Mod, Vdub MP3 freeze, Nandub, nothing worked.
I understand the audio problem but i don't undestand why the video is slow even witout the audio.
Sorry for the long post, but i wanted to explain exactly my problem, sorry also for my English, please help and post a sollution. Thanks in advance.

The first play button plays the source video. The second play button plays the source video and does whatever filtering you have set up and displays the result of that too (in the output frame) -- so it's playing two videos. Don't worry about the fact that it's not smooth, it's just way too much work for the program to do in real time. In fact, don't worry about jerky playback at all in VirtualDub. It's not designed for playback and it doesn't work very well for for that under many circumstances.
Note, the little letter next to the play buttons are I and O for Input and Output. -
I know what the play buutons do, but with other anime videos virtual dub doesn't go slower when playing the uotput video, also when vdub does that i haven't insert any filter.

junkmalle is correct. That's the way VDub behaves. Live with it. It will still output a nice AVI once you save.
