I had this twice in the past 6 months. I use Pinnacle Studio 8 to capture DV or convert VHS to avi file. Sometimes I use Studio 8 to do everything from avi to DVD. Sometimes I use VirtualDub, TMPEGEnc Plus, and DVDLab-Pro for the same purpose. What happened to my HD was after I reboot my system, windows 2000 told me something is wrong with my 200G datadrive where I store my avi files and edited files. System recommended a check and then I saw a lot of "deleting orphan file ???" (or something like that), after that the system reboot again.

That caused me a lot of files. After the check/fix, many files were gone or corrupted. I kinda believe it is because I had several large files and the file system just got screwed.

What is my best chance for my problem? Like today, I tried to convert a 4.5 hours cartoon and screwed my hd again. This is really pain in the ass.

Make sure your drive is defragged before you capture, and it probably wouldn't hurt (and would probably be quicker than a defrag) to reformat it every once in a while if possible.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I see you're running W2K. I had the same problem you had under W2K with a 160-GB SATA drive. The file system kept getting corrupted. After implementing the 48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows 2000 from Microsoft over a year ago I never had the problem again.

What was odd was that I also have a 250-GB IDE drive. I never had problems before or after the fix with that drive. Even though the fix was for W2K SP2 (and below) and, at the time, I was running SP3, which supports large drives > 137GB, I still implemented it. The file system on my SATA drive was getting corrupted about once a week and I was desperate to try anything. To my amazement that fix worked. It may be worth a try for you too.

Good Luck and let's know if works.

And by the way I'm running W2K SP4 now also.
