Hi everyone,
I purchased a 100 pack of Ty 16x dvd-r media @ Rima.com. I have tried them with two different burners in my pc - one is a 8x burner and one is 16x, but the maximum write speed I can get using decrypter or nero 6 is 4x. The burners are an LG-4182b and a Lite On SOHW-1633S. The odd thing is that both burners will recognize and burn 8x discs @ 8x with no problems but will only recognize or burn the 16x Ty's as 4x.
Here is the media info I get from dvdinfopro:

Same thing when I test with Nero CDspeed or try to burn with Nero - 4x max only. I don't think it's the discs - they are TY's from Japan and marked "DVD-R 16X for Professional" on the paper ring at the top of the spindle. Also, coming from Rima.com I would be surprised if they were fakes.
Anyone have any idea what the problem may be here, or any suggestions on what I should try to do correct it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Roy

If you don't have Kprobe, download it and see what write descriptors your LITEON reports using Kprobe.
Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.0x 2770KBps
Available Write Descriptor CLV 1.0x 1385KBps
---------------------------------------------------------
Supported Write Speeds: 1x, 2x, 4x
If worse comes to worse, you can enable the other speeds with firmware using your LITEON.If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

Thanks for the reply,
I downloaded Kprobe and here are the results I got:
Disc Type DVD-R
Book Type DVD-R
Manufacturer Taiyo Yuden Company Limited
Media ID TYG03
Protection System None
Region 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
Capacity 4.38 GB
Free Size 4.38 GB
Free Blocks 2297888
Number of Layers 1
Linear Density 0.267 um/bit
Track Density 0.74 um/track
Maximum Read Speed 3.2x
Maximum Write Speed 4.0x
Current Write Speed 4.0x CLV
Write Speed Performance Descriptor 1 4.0x CLV
Write Speed Performance Descriptor 2 2.0x CLV
Write Speed Performance Descriptor 3 1.0x CLV
The results are the same. The discs came on 2 spindles from Rima, and I ran the test on several discs from each spindle - results were the same on all.
I'm not sure what to think here - i've never gotten fake media before, so I'm not sure what to look for. However, I have purchased plenty of Ty media from Rima in the past, and they certainly look authentic, right down to the icky dust-magnet shiny top (the only complaint I've ever had with Ty discs).
You mentioned using firmware to enable the other speeds - should I try and see if there is a newer manufacturer upgrade, or is there hacked firmware I should use?
Thanks Again,
Roy -

Then I tried a cheapo philips 8x cmc mag disc - burned and verified perfectly at 8x.
So, the Lite-on won't burn the ty discs at all, but will burn other discs fine (and at the top rated speed of the disc). But, the Lg drive will burn the Ty discs fine, but only @ 4x, even though it will burn 8x discs @ full speed. I'm more confused now than ever. -
