Is it possible to format an external hard drive to win98 and then transfer those files over to a XP system? 98 is fat32 xp is ntfs?

I ask because I already have a nfts formatted external, but it won't work with the 98 system. would nfts system be able to see fat32?

XP Can See Fat32 and NTFS

98 Can Only See Fat32 (and FAT)

Your external drive would have to be formatted for Fat32 in order to be swapped between both systems.

  4. FYI- I have an external with 2 parttitions. One is NTFS and the other is fat32. The fat32 part. has some older apps. that work under my XP main drive if that's what you are trying to do.

  5. I suggest that DD do what PFH did...add a partition to the external and format it with FAT32. You might have to use Paritition Magic to allocate the space and create the partition, but you wouldn't have to reformat.

During the format process, it will ask you what file system to format to (or, you will select the file system you want).
