  1. You do not have to have to reformat your hard drive; do you?

    Is this the correct procedure?

1.Go to Control Panel,System,Right Click on the DVD-RW icon,go to properties, click on driver and click on Uninstall.

    2. Unplug the 40pin IDE ribbon cable, the 4pin power cable, and the 4 pin audio cable. Dispose of the old DVD Burner.

3 Slide in the New DVD Burner, plug in plug the 40pin IDE ribbon cable, the 4pin power cable, and the audio cable.

    4. Is there a disc that comes with the DVD Burner that you have to pop in and follow the directions?

Is that all I have to do?

Don't do step 1, the driver is the standard Windows driver for CD and DVD drives. All you ned do is swap the old drive for the new one, that's it. You will not get a driver disc because the driver is already there in Windows.

The only problem you might find is with some of your software not recognising it. I was running Nero version 5.5 which recognised my pioneer A05 DVD writer. I then changed the Pioneer for an NEC 3520 and Nero couldn't see it. The NEC was so much newer than Nero so it had no idea what an NEC 3520 was. I had to upgrade to a later version of Nero that knew about the drive.

No, the burner will automatically detect the correct speed that the disc is capable of being burned at. Some 8x rated discs aren't capable of being burned at 8x in some burners, they might run at 4 or 6x. The opposite is also true. I have some Verbatim Taiyo Yuden dye discs that are rated at 8x, but my NEC starts off at 8x then moves up a gear and burns them at 12x. It depends on the precise burner and disc in use.
