  1. Recently I've been trying to back up some old concert VHS tapes to DVD-R. The process has been like this:

    Record from VHS to DVD-R

Take .vob files from the disc and then using TMPGenc demux the ac3 and m2v files.

Multiplex them again using TMPGenc to get a final mpeg2 file.

When I play this in media player it's fine, however when I try to make chapters using Ulead DVD workshop there is no audio during playback making it impossible to chapter correctly. I also tried TMPG DVD author and the same thing happened.

Does anyone have any possible idea's why this is happening?

    Thanks for reading.

Which version of DVD Workshop are you using? 1.x, 2.x, Full, Express, Trial, etc...

Some versions do not support AC3 audio (like older 1.x versions, and the 2.x TRIAL)

I had the same problem with TMPGEnc DVD Author (v1.5) until I discovered, as GeorgeW says, that it doesn't support the playback of the AC3 audio - even 2 channel.

I went ahead and authored and the audio plays fine and in sync.

Admittedly, it's a pain if you need to hear the audio for, say, selecting chapter points.

I got round this by using the WAV audio as the source, doing what I needed to do (selecting chapter points) and then going back and pointing TDA to use the AC3 equivalent of the WAV.

Of course, this assumes you have a WAV of the AC3...

    Good luck.

You have to buy the AC-3 plug-in to hear the AC-3 audio...

...for version 1.6 of TDA. No susch AC3 plugin exists for v1.5 of TDA. Not sure about the other tools mentioned.

  6. Thanks for all of the help guys, I'm just about to try it with a wav file instead of ac3.

I'm using DVD Workshop 2 trial, which versions support ac3? Thanks!

    Thanks again.

For DVD WS 2.x -- the Full and Express versions support Dolby Digital audio.

My version that I just used to produce a DVD with is 1.5.20.62 and it definitely needed the plug-in to hear the AC-3 sound...

When you start up the program there is a momentary flash that says AC-3 (in red), so you know the plug-in is installed...

It's also needed to encode and decode AC-3 sound in TMPGEnc DVD Express 3.0...
