  1. I'm an animator and I have made a DVD of one of my films. I encoded it (TMPGEnc), authored it (DVD-lab), and burned it (Nero speed = x1) to a DVD-R. It plays on most players, but on a few it skips. This is most noticeable with the audio, but it is also skipping images as well on some players. The audio is AC3 and the video is a MPEG-2.

I would like to make it compatible on all players so I can sell it. It works on almost all players now, but on some it skips. Can someone tell me what may be causing this? Is this an encoding problem or is it possibly due to the media?

    thanks!

What kind of Burner? What application do you use to burn the DVD-R with?

Probably the media, that's the usual culprit for a disc that skips in one player and doesn't for another. Be aware that a lot of DVD players will only play one type of disc either -R or +R, not both. Just thought I'd mention that if you intentions are on selling your discs, that obviously can be an issue.

Good media and a good burn are essential but I agree with thecoalman,
there is no way to make a DVD, using your computer and a burner, that
will be 100% compatible in all new and old DVD players.

  6. Thanks for the replies gang, here are the answers to the various questions you all asked

burning program: Nero ROM (burned at speed x1)
    media: Sonic DVD-R 4.7GB
    burner: PIONEER DVR-A06

I had thought that Sonic was actually a good quality brand of DVD-R. Am I wrong about that?

According to the DVD Media link found to the left it depends on which sonic discs you have, there is quite a few and they go from good to very poor. Most are either mixed or poor. You can alos look up the DVD player your using to see if it's compatible with the disc your using under DVD players....

Thing to remeber is that there is only a few manufacturers of DVD's there alomost all rebranded. Use the link to the left as a guide.

WWJD? Well he would buy Taiyo of course

ok gang I'll get some of these and report back with the results.

    Also I was reading here
that audio encoded at 128kbps instead of 224kbps is more compatable. I encoded mine at 448 bitrate because I thought higher bitrate=plays better and that was the highest setting ffmpegGUI has. So could this possibly be a problem?

I suppose it would not account for the skipping of both the audio and the picture. For what it's worth, the video was encoded with a 2-pass VBR (variable bitrate)
    min 4200
    average 6000
    max 9400

I tried playing it on a PS3 today and it was skipping all over the place on that too, jumping ahead 30-40 seconds at a time(!)

It could well be the high bitrates causing issues, as your combined bitrate is 9848kbps (if my maths is correct ). That statement regarding 128kbps playing back better than 224kbps is BS - at least for DVD it is (the thread was discussing VCD IIRC). higher bitrate=plays better is too. It should theoretically sound better, but then ffmpeggui only does 2ch AC3, so I don't think you'd notice any audible difference above 256kbps or thereabouts. Perhaps try dropping your max bitrate back to about 8000-8500 ? While you're at it, I'd personally drop your min back to about 2000 also

Or it could be media - your player and this media or your burner and this media.

I don't think it's Nero, as I've seen at least 20 Pioneer DVDRWs now that work flawlessly with any Nero version.
    If in doubt, Google it.
