It's no big deal, but since I'm relatively new to this recorder I thought I'd pass on a little (probably already known) quirk I ran into. I'm on the latest drive update and the 1194 hacked firmware system update. I guess that I ran into this because I followed a procedure that most intelligent users wouldn't even try. I was recording old cooking shows for my wife to put them together into archives. Since they were on different VHS tapes, and I didn't have time to do 6 hours at once, I recorded them in several sessions. I then merged the 4 sessions into one, removed the chapter marks created by the merge (stupid move) and started adding chapter marks from the beginning. This was unneccessary, as each merged session already started at a new show, and the chapter mark was correct anyway. It worked fine until I approached the point where the original chapter mark created by default during the merge of the second session would have been. The unit locked up tight. Nothing worked. Powered off, powered on and everything was fine except that I lost all the editing I had done. Re-created this situation 3 times in a row, just to prove to myself that I wasn't nuts. In short, if you merge multiple sessions, my experience is that the chapter marks from the merge should be LEFT ALONE. When I did this, everything was fine. As a side note: maybe I'm not as discriminating as some, but I have a ton of 6-hr VHS tapes to archive, most of them very old. I see no difference in quality when using the SLP (6 hr) speed on the ILO, even though it drops to MPEG-1. For me, this is great, as I can pop in a tape, hit one-touch, go to bed and with a short edit session the next day I have transferred 3 movies off very old tapes at comparable quality and maintained a one-for-one relationship between original and archive.

You might try going to the new 1195 firmware. 1194 was a beta to get the green tint taken care of but there is a newer release. It is posted on my site. Since it is a drive and system update, it can be applied alone.

Thanks, GM. I have applied the update - it may be some time before I can test that particular situation again, but I'll give it a shot. One quick question - you don't have to answer, but it may be a while before I try it. I've never tried copying a dvd to the HDD. I made the comment that even with the MV hack I have no interest in copying movies that don't belong to me (I know no one believes me <G>) - but I do intend to copy a few that we really like, in case they get damaged. My intent was to play the dvd on my player, and just record the movie, then burn to a DVD. If I copy the commerical dvd in the hd04, that is, copy to HDD, does it actually copy all the special features and main menu, etc? IOW, does it actually create a true copy of the DVD?

I'm a little curious as to how the ILO can copy a dual layer dvd to the HDD. If I copy an mpeg video to the HDD, the recorder will not allow any kind of editing of the file. The file being over 4 GB in size wouldn't allow copying to a DVD.
Have you tried to copy more than 1 type of DVD to your HDD. I'm not sure how the ILO would handle multiple mpeg files from a commercial DVD. Does your copy show multiple mpeg files after it does the copy? -
I guess I was a little confusing, because I said I'd never copied a dvd to the HD, then said I did <G>. I've only copied dvd's by playing them on my dvd player, and recording the video to the HDD. I'm sorry, I also assumed that you had the ILO dvdrhd04. I've not actually gone ahead and recorded the movie from the HD to another dvd either - it was just sort of an experiment. I have 2 teenagers, a boy and a girl, and I have had to buy movies a second time on a few occasions because one of their friends would screw it up. Up to now, the condition was that they had to pay half for the new one. Now, they can just give me a buck (reponsibility, eh? not cheapness on my part!) and I'll record a copy ahead of time. Or, they can ignore it, lose the dvd or pay me half again. My question about copying concerned whether if I record it to the HDD using the unit, would it copy all the content, or is my only option doing it the way I do now. The current method is fine with me, as all I care about is the actual movie itself. I'm going to give it a shot this week end and see what happens. I'll post back here and let you know.

alleygator,
You can only copy by playing in another deck, thus, no extra stuff. If you have a computer with DVD burner, the way to go would be DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink. They will copy all content and reduce it to fit on a recordable single layer disc. This is the only way you are going to get all the extras and spcial features. -
To All 5045 users
I have update the ILO Firmware Download Page to include the new 5045 197 (US) and 196 (EU & UK) firmware update. They are all hacked versions.
To get to them, go to the main page and click on "Other Helpful Information and Links" to get to the 5045 download page.
