Please help... I'm so close on this one, but MAN, just that last little problem is getting me...
Downloaded an avi that is PAL. Converting to MPEG1 for a VCD that is NTSC. No probnlems there, I figured out how to keep the aspect ratio...
the problem is the SOUND... while the files's audio/video plays fine on my PC when I open the avi, TMPGEnc doesn't want the sound file when encoding to MPEG. Fine; I downloaded VIRTUALdub and made a WAV of the audio from the original avi. I encoded the original video (from the avi) along with the new wav file.
4 hours later (using WIN xp on an old, slow PC) I watch the new MPEG and the sound syncs ok for the first few minutes, then there's a hiccup, and everything's off sync... another hiccup, and its worse.
I played back the WAV file in TMPGenc a few times and can randomly hear the hiccup in the same general areas, but it does seem to shift...!! AARRGGH! What is causing the hiccup?
How can I get rid of it so that my final MPEG created from the avi's video and a good WAV file make a happy, synced MPEG video that I can burn!? I'm tyring avi2wav (aviwav35) next, but I am hoping that someone here might have some insight in the meantime... Do I need help understanding so I can click more specific settings in VirtualDub (I can't get the 'Conversion' command to open from this file)?? Might avi2wav be easier and make a nicer wav??
Thanks in advance!

So, yeah, I had the same problem using avi2wav... I get hiccups in the sound all over the place when I play back the sample in TMPGenc...
Can someone please help me get rid of the sound problems I am having?
How do I get either TMPGenc to recognize the original audio stream of the original avi and encode it along with the video stream into the mPEG I am making? OR What's wrong with either the process, programmes, or computer I am using that is making the sound jump/hiccup when I use either virtualdub or avi2wav to convert the avi's sound file into a wav to use for the future encoding??

Try this.
1. Use VirtualDubMod to open AVI file. Demux the sound as it is.
2. Convert the demuxed sound to MPEG-1 Layer II (VCD compliant) using HeadAC3he. You will get .mp2 file.
3. Next disable the sound the VirtualDubMod and create an AVI with only video. Use DirectStream Copy.
4. Open this video-only avi file in TMPGEnc and encode to NTSC VCD compliant video only elementary stream (ES). You will get .m1v file.
5. Use the "Simple Multiplex" option under "MPEG Options" in TMPGEnc to multiplex the .m1v file & the .mp2 file to create a MPEG file.
This mpeg file will be NTSC VCD compliant and should be without any hiccups.
Good Luck.When I was born I was so shocked that I could'nt speak for 18 months. -
Thanks.... I'll try that too...
Just in case I have any problems, can you give me any specifics about your step #3 as to how exactly I save the video...?

OK, already confused (sorry). What does demuxed mean? I am VERY new to virtualdub programmes.... Any further step by step instructions with further definition would be appreciated. Thnx

Vdub has an option to "save as AVI" which will do the trick.
It may output a massive multi gig file depending on how long the video is, so if HD space is a concern, you could try frameserving the video over to TMPGEnc.
This guide explains that process.
Demuxing is splitting the sound and video into seperate files, while muxing means putting them together. -
Thank you... very appreciated. I'll try those.
