  1. Hi. I'm trying to back up my Family Guy DVD's with my Xbox but all I get is a bunch of .VOB files and a whole bunch of others. I get the same thing with my DVD's too. Is there a way for me to convert these files EASILY and have them play episode by episode? Also if possible shrink them down to a resonable size per episode (around 150 MB)? Also, I do not have a PC DVD drive.

So you have a PC but no DVD-Rom drive. Then get one, they can be had for $20 or so. You won't get anywhere with an Xbox.

  6. That's what I have to copy it onto my Xbox HD. However, I'm just having problems converting the episodes/movies. It's just a bunch of .vob files and a audio TS folder.

I think you need a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert the files to a usable format.

You would have to get them off the4 xbox, convert them to, say, Divx or Xvid, then load them back on the xbox along with some media centre type software to play them. There is a large xbox-media centre project that you can google for that will probably have all the answers for you, but I think you will still have to have a PC in the mix somewhere, so spend the $20

Is this just a hobby for you, or "see if I can do it?" It would be much easier and less expensive (time-wise) to get a $50-$75 DVD burner and backup your discs that way. Besides, the 10Gig drive on the XBox doesn't afford much space for ripping and/or converting.

  11. I already have the Xbox Media Center with a 120 GB harddrive for my movies. I jsut wanted to load them up and watch FG right off the Xbox.

Even so, I stand by my answer. 120 is still not enough to "permanently" have your videos, unless you convert to DivX or some other (more) compressed format.

Looking at this, it will copy your DVD's onto the HD in ISO format which you can then mount and play as if they were regular DVD's, but they are not compressed in anyway and take up lods of space on your HD. If you want to back them up or convert to a smaller format (such as xvid), use a PC.

  14. It doesn't copy it to a ISO format. It copies it as a bunch of .VOBS and a audio-TS folder. That's my problem, I have no idea what to do next and get each episode down to a decent size/

Do you have a PC, and can FTP to your XBox (or otherwise get stuff from your XBox to your PC and the other way around)? If so, transfer the VOBs to your PC, then follow regular DVD to AVI procedure, and FTP the AVI back to your XBox

Why didn't you say that earlier!!!!

There are plenty of guides on this site on converting from DVD to more compressed formats such as xvid or divx. I believe there is an xvid codec available for the xbox, so that would probably be the format to choose. Just read a few guides and learn how to convert your VOB files tec to xvid for PC playback. Once you have that figured you should be able to FTP them to the xbox, install the xvid codec and watch them to your hearts content!

  20. I found it easily on xbox scene:
Can I backup my DVD movies to my Xbox HDD?
    Yes. However

What program should I use to play my backed up DVDs?
You can use the MS Dashboard to play any burned DVD if you have the DVD dongle kit. You can use dvdx 2 to play a burned disc if you don't have the dongle kit. You can use Xbox Media Center (XBMC) either way. Information on all three programs can be foundo n this site.

How do I back up DVDs to my Xbox HDD?
You use a program called dvd2xbox by WiSo. This program works for movies and games. Please read the dvd2xbox Video Ripping Information guide for more information.

Can I access DVD menus from my Xbox HDD?
No. Unfortunately this is not possible at the moment though many people are working to try to make this a possibility in the future.

How can I use my Xbox to play backed up movies or video files from my PC?
Use XBMC, the best video tool for the Xbox.

How to I use Xbox Media Center (XBMC)?
Read the pinned topic, Xbox Media Center General Information, to answer your questions.
