  1. Im just trying to encode a simple avi file to burn onto DVD. But when i try playing it, the video is blank. But the audio is working fine. Any ideas on what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

A codec problem. More details of the AVI needed. Try loading the AVI in VirtualDub and frameserve it to TMPGEnc - Solves most problems with AVIs TMPGEnc has trouble with.

VirtualDub loads the AVI fine, and can play it?
If so, it's not a codec problem, since VirtualDub does all the decoding and handles already decoded frames to TMPGEnc. (That's the sole reason for frameserving in this case). You're not by any chance doing a 2 pass VBR encode, and are looking at the black preview window that TMPGEnc shows during the first pass (=up to 50%)?

  6. yea virtual dub plays just fine. iono wha the 2 pass VBR encode is. Basically what I did was rip the audio with virtual dub. Then use tmpgenc. wit the Project wizard... i did DVD ->NTSC-> CPR MPEG1 Layer II Audio (MP2)... then all i changed was dis capacity to 25% and changed the video arrange method into center (custom size) at 640x440. thats it. encded it. once it finished.. i played it.. didnt have video

OK, just so we're talking the same language:
    Load AVI in VirtualDub.
    Rip audio. (Why?)
    Start frameserver in VirtualDub.
Start TMPGEnc, select the NTSC DVD template.
Select the .vdr frameserver "file" from VirtualDub as video source, the extracted wav as audio source.
Alter some settings with respect to resolution, mpeg type and bitrate in TMPGEnc.
    Start

FWIW, 640x440 is not a valid DVD resolution, but you should be able to play the resulting mpg anyway, even if it can't be authored as DVD...
