I am trying to convert a xvid to DVD in virtual dub, but I can't find a setting that will leave the original letterbox. Can I do this in virtual dub?

VirtualDub by default should output exactly the same res as the input. So if the input is letterboxed, so will the output.
Converting to DVD though? So you are using something like yMPEG or ffdshow for encoding? -
I've tried both virtual dub and tmpgenc to convert. Sometimes I use virtual dub to convert the audio and save a new avi and let DVD workshop convert to DVD and other times I let virtual dub just make the new wave file and encode it tmpgenc. I am not getting consistent results with either program. Sometimes the audio is slightly off and other times DVD movie factory won't open the mpg or avi.
For some reason virtual dub seems to be removing the letterbox, I must have something set wrong. -
I spent all this morning trying to get the aspect ratio back using TMPGEnc to convert a widescreen PAL avi into an NTSC MPEG... here's what I did:
Aspect ratios (converting/encoding in TMPGEnc) from the PAL video into our NTSC are fun... took me 20 tries to get it, but the EXPERT setting for SOURCE has to be PAL, while in OTHER (advanced) settings, you set the output to FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO).... That SEEMS to keep the original widescreen aspect ratio of the file...
Hope this helpsDoc, AKA dalek7

yep the xvid input sould be in 1:1 aspect ratio, & set the output to FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO).... & set you final mpg aspect 4:3 (if you want boarder, else 16:9) in tmpeg....

I can do it in tmpgenc, but didn't see the setting in virtualdub for the letterbox. Sometimes after waiting hours for tmpgenc to encode the final mpg stutters. It will pause on each frame for 2 or 3 seconds. I set it to highest quality with the same results.
