Sorry, but I didn't know which board to post this on...

I have some video files that I want to burn, however the computer they are currently on doesn't have a cd/dvd burner. What is the best way to transfer them to another computer. Once again, I apologize if this is the wrong board.

  2. Transfer them with an external Hard Drive.

do both machines have some sort of high-speed connection like firewire or usb 2.0?

If so, you could use those external hard drive kits (maybe a kit that has both USB2 and firewire for better flexibility).

Or, perhaps put your DVD Burner inside an external kit, and just move the burner between machines...

  4. I'd transfer across a network, or temporarily install a DVD writer.

  6. There was a time I used a notebook to capture at a relative's house. I then bought the notebook home and connected it to a computer with the dvd burner using a special Ethernet cable called a crossover cable. The Ethernet cards were 10/100base. An entire movie of about 4 GB would transfer in 11-15 minutes.

Heh, I'm a n00b when it comes to computers so I have no idea how to do any of those (except for the 3000 floppies, but that'd take too long.)

  8. If both computers have network cards installed, you could do this:

  9. Virtually every computer made in the last five years or so has a "network card" or "network connection". It was originally called Ethernet and the connector is officially called an RJ-45. It looks like a big telephone connector. It is used to hook up cable and dsl modems.

Just go to your local computer store and ask for an Ethernet crossover cable. They are made by companies like Belkin and cost about $10. The instructions inside will explain what to do.

I guess with the networking approach, they are near each other (for cable networking), or within range for wireless networking???

  11. I transfer video files around my computers using FTP. I find it a little faster than using Windows network drives.

The one extra thing I do is make a PAR2 parity set (just with one block) to ensure integrity. It's free, and you can get it here: http://www.quickpar.org.uk/

I'm just curious, is there a website that allows temporary storage on their server so I can download the file later on the other computer?

I don't feel like dishing money right now. I'll use that as a last resort.

As $10 seems too much for you, there only appears to be one option left. If both computers have internet access and you aren't in a hurry, you could always email from one to the other......

for something quick, you could try the free TRIAL at:
    -xdrive.com
    -flashbackup.com

Up to 1gb I think is included in the free trial.

Warning: they do request a credit card, but if you cancel in time you will not be billed. So it's up to you if you want to go that route...
