    i'm setting up an e-mail account for a friend of mine.. i can get it to recieve mail, but i cant get it to send mail.. always fails sending.. i checked, rechecked & checked again, all my settings are correct according to the setup guide mentioned on this page;

    http://www.sanbornwebdesigns.com/SWD/clients/email_servicesmsx-5.asp

i've even tried it through thunderbird, same thing.. it will recieve, just not send..

so then i checked out mail2web.com.. with the basic login i was able to send & recieve email just fine..

i was told by sanborn web designs that it could possibly my friends isp that is preventing them from sending email.

    does anyone have any suggestions?

Some mail servers want your full account info (i.e. name@domain.com) versus just name. Also, some use the same address for POP and SMTP, some don't. Not sure all of what you've done, so I'm just throwing ideas out there.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

You have not jprovided a whole lot of information to work with.

    In gereral:
It is your isp or mail server that determines what you need to put in the settings portion of your email program.

If you have anti-virus and/or firewall protection that also scrrens email, then you may have a conflict with one or both. There should be a way to turn off email scanning for both so you can determine if this is where the problem is.

I use AVG anti-virus and zonealarm in conjunction with incredimail and have yet to figure out how to conigure them to scan outgoing mail and still work. Admittedly I have tried to hard as I am not concered to much with outgoing mail provided that system is clean to start. My daughter running same sys and software just did typical install of programs and hers works, so dumb me is at a loss as to what is different.

Are you actually sending this mail from the ISP who is hosting this email account? That is, are you connected to their network provider when you do this, or are you "relaying" the mail by connecting using some other network first and then trying to send mail from that account?

Gads, even I can't understand what I just wrote there! Okay, I'll try again: Let's say his email account is "bob@mywebsite.com," and it's hosted by Sanborn web services, or whatever. Is he (and are you) connecting to the internet through Sanborn web services as your dialup or cable or DSL provider?

If not (and I'm guessing this is the case), your outgoing mail server is not "smtp.mywebsite.com" but instead is "smtp.yourinternetprovider.com." Most internet providers do not allow what is called "relaying" mail, meaning you have to have an account on your ISP for mail sending and use that account (with appropriate login) for sending any mail.

So, as a fr'instance, if you are at work and have Comcast as your provider, your outgoing mail server, no matter what your incoming mail server is, would be "smtp.comcast.net." Again, your incoming server can be pretty much anything, you can read from different servers anywhere, but your outgoing server has to belong to whatever network you are connecting from, orginally.

Hopefully that made some kind of sense. And hopefully it'll help. Let us know if that works or not!

it makes perfect sense.. i tested it out, and it worked.. i find it kind of unusual though, because a year or so ago i was able to use my incoming & outgoing email servers from a different webhost through my isp (we share the same isp) without issue.. maybe they changed their policies or something..

either way, it works now, and the email when recieved looks like its coming from the webhost email not the isp email.. although if they look in the header info, they'll probably see that its from the isp.

    thanks for your help.

Yay! I forgot to mention that (to anybody else who may be reading) -- even though you use a different mail sending host, this should appear "transaparent" to the recipient, they should just see your return address (bob@mywebsite.com), not the sending server.

And yeah, this is something that not every ISP does or did before (not allowing relaying of mail) but it's becoming an issue more frequently nowadays, because of spam -- spammers love to relay mail through various servers and this helps fight that. And of course they'll change things like this and not tell you ahead of time, you just find your mail isn't working, contact "customer service," and they say, "oh, yeah, we changed that last month." Thanks for letting us know!

i figured it had something to do with spam.. but i doubt that detoured the spammers for more than 5 minutes.
