I have a new Polaroid Portable DVD Player PDV-0713A. I've disabled captions and subtitles on the settings screen but still whenever I put a dvd in it automatically turns on the subtitles on the dvd. This is very annoying because the only way to turn them off is to go back into the menu of the dvd and set subtitles to off. I have a friend who has the exact same model and it doesn't do this. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it so subtitles aren't automatically enabled?

I had the exact same issue. Here is my exchange with Polaroid customer service:
Hello Carl,
The subtitles being on as you have stated would be a factory defect within the programing of the unit. However, after shutting the subtitles off on the DVD Root Menu for a few movies, it should alter the settings to be read as off. I have personally checked this with a player of the exact make and model, and found that the player will set itself to having the subtitles off. If this is something that you deem to be unacceptable, there are two routes with which we could take, the first of which would be returning the unit to your place of purchase. If this is not acceptable either, feel free to give us a call at one of the following numbers:
In the United States 866-289-5168
In Canada 866-301-7922
In Mexico 01-800-400-2443

Thank you for your business and we appreciate the opportunity to help you.

Subject: RE: Polaroid Customer Response
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, the subtitles are what I was
talking about, so my original question should have been . . .
[Beginning of Question]
"I purchased the PDV-0713B dvd player at Sam's club a couple of days
ago. It works great but the only way to get sub-titles off is by using
the dvd's setup menu to turn them off. Turning sub-titles off in the
dvd player's setup menu has no effect whatsoever. This seems to be the
same for every movie (I have tried about 15 different movies). Is this
the normal operation or should the player's caption setting be able to
turn sub-titles off? It is kind of a pain to have to do it for every
movie."
[End of Question]
Your previous response did not answer my question. I think it may have
been a communication error on my part so let me explain this a bit
further: Using the DVD's DISC'S setup menu DOES turn the subtitles off,
but according to the manual supplied with my DVD player, the user should
be able to turn subtitles off by the DVD PLAYER'S setup menu AND THEN
SUBTITLES SHOULD BE OFF FOR ALL MOVIES FROM THAT POINT ON - THIS IS WHAT
THE MANUAL STATES!!! I have several home DVD players and the subtitles
are ALWAYS OFF BY DEFAULT! I don't need to turn off the subtitles for
any movie on any of my home DVD players. This Polaroid DVD player is
the ONLY player I have ever seen that has the subtitles on by default.
I have gone into the DVD PLAYER'S setup menu and subtitles are turned
off (as the supplied manual says to do), yet when I stick a DVD in the
player, subtitles are on for that movie. I have to use the DVD DISC'S
menu to turn subtitles off, but the manual states that you can use the
DVD PLAYER'S caption option (the manual says captions, not subtitles) to
turn the subtitles off. The manual for this DVD player is located on
your website at:
http://www.polaroidelectronics.com/pdf/products/dvdPlayerPortable/PDV-07
13B_Manual_20041210.pdf. I followed the manual's instructions and
turned the captions off on the General Setup page and also set Subtitle
to off on the Preferences page on the Polaroid DVD PLAYER'S menu. When
I start the movie, subtitles are on. If I put the disc in any of my
home DVD player's the subtitles are off (like I would expect). What I
am trying to determine is the correct operation of the DVD player. I am
trying to determine if my player is working correctly or if it has a
factory defect. If this is a known issue, I can live with that . . . I
would just like to know.
I bought the player for my kids to watch DVDs in the car on road trips.
But if you have to manually turn off subtitles on every disc, then that
is not very user (i.e., kid) friendly. Is my DVD player not functioning
correctly? If it is functioning correctly, then what is the purpose of
the "subtitles off" in the PLAYER'S menu if it does turn subtitles off?
I have found someone else with the same problem:

Carl

Hi Carl;
Thank you for your recent inquiry about the 'closed-captions'.
Actually, it is the subtitles that we need to turn off. So, if you put
a movie in your player and when you see the words at the bottom of the
screen, press the menu button; this will take you to the Root Menu.
Find the option that says either Languages, or Setup. Then choose the
option that says either NONE or SUB-TITLES OFF. Then you can resume or
play movie. Hopefully this will take the sub-titles off your screen.
If it does not please call me at our customer service line at
1-866-289-5168. We are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Thank you for your business and we appreciate the opportunity to help
you.
Sincerely;

Yours must also have the programming defect. I would try to exchange or return it. -
I have the same problem with my 8"Initial Brand DVD Player. I always have to use the remote to turn them off. Nothing in the menu works.

Thanks alot for the info, I really appreciate it!!!
I called their tech support number and talked to a woman on there but she told me that it is supposed to do that, that the supbtitles are supposed to come on always like that. This doesn't make any sense to me because like you said every other dvd player I have ever owned or seen doesn't do this. Anyway they were no help. Unfortunately it is too late for me to return it, besides this it is a great player though. I think by best option will be to buy the remote, which is $20 and has the Subtitle button right on it.
Thanks again,
