I have an avi file on my HDD for a long time, and now I can't do anything with it(raname, move even delete it). I run a patch(or registry key; the file have 'exe' extension) for fixing avi bug in WIndows XP, but that didn't help. Also I try to remove all premision and add only administrator from security tab on properties, but that also didn't help. Can I make something to rename and move the file (that is what I want) or at least delete it when anything goes wrong.

what's the exact error it gives you ?

  3. Man it's been a long time since I posted! Try running the CMD console, going to the directory and using the "DEL" function to delete the file. The problem is sometimes when you try to use "My Computer" to delete a corrupt AVI, Media Player is still trying to read it when you select it and try to delete it, and Windows is too stupid to cease it. By using the CMD console, you bypass the whole integreated Media Player thingy.

    Is this what you did?
    Unable to Delete AVI Fix.

    Open regedit and go to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler
Delete the value you find there.

This is due to XP (explorer in particular) trying to create a preview
for it. Now because the file is corrupted or incomplete,
it cannot read it properly, hence, it will not release the file.
This prevents explorer from doing this.

As usual, backup the registry key before deleting it.

Your advise help me. Thank you! I don't use Media Player because this player is so stupid as Win XP is, so I have enough stupid programs on my PC I use BS Player integrated in KLite Mega Codec Pack 1.17 and the problem with "still trying to read it" stay. Maybe this is a bug in Windows and Microsoft may release a fix for it. Thank you again, man.

I will try next time that what you say.(guess I express right)

  6. A program to remove stubborn files...a freebie!

    http://www.gibinsoft.net/gipoutils/bin/moveonb.exe

It's called MoveOnBoot and will allow you to select the file in question and delete it when you reboot.

It always happen when you use some programs to fix corrupted .avi file.
It never happens with the use of Virtualdub.
I had that problem several times. Sometimes it helps to change the extension from .avi into .txt and sometimes it could be deleted when you reboot in safe mode.
Sometimes I managed to delete them using the explorer within Vegas.

    Sretno Bugarine!
