i will give you a medal if you can get any n64 emualtor to work correctly its a task and a half i will tell you that..
    What emulator are you running?

Some of them are touchy with sound emulation (especially on-board), so try turning off sound in the emulator and see if that helps.

I'm sure you've seen this site, but it has tons of info as well as all the plugins you'll need:

I remember trying out an N64 emulator a few years ago and it ran Mario 64 great. Can't remember the name of it though.

I also used to use a PS emulator that ran somewhat perrfect, it came documented that some games didn't work one of which was Music Generator (which is the only one I tried that didn't work). But also cannot remember the name of it.
    His name was MackemX

what type of PC controller would be good for n64 games? i was able to play with the keyboard, but not well.

well im sure a controller which resembles an N64 one but comp compatible would be preferable, but i dont think those are out, i have a controller which is just like a PS controller, except no rumble:

there are places that sell a 'dongle' or whatever that will allow you to connect an N64 controller to USB

    You talkin' about www.adaptoid.com?

Works like a champ, and Project64 has an adaptoid plug-in.

    You can get controllers here
    http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/222538.asp
and other things, like memory and rumble packs (force-feedback)

    Edit:

    here's more

funny, i've had goldeneye running at a perfectly acceptable speed through good ol' HLE64 on an AMD K6/2 450mhz machine with a voodoo banshee card..... dont laugh, in the day that was about as fast as i could reasonably afford, it was hellafastquick!
i mean, damn, it's been so many years since i even tried that, we probably didnt even have gigahertz-plus CPUs when i gave up.

acceptable - not super quick or smooth, but you could play the game for a fair while until you got sick of struggling with the keyboard controls (and yeah.. it was mostly silent, sound was pretty buggy). id be shocked if an n64 emulator "stuttered" on my duron 1600 let alone a 2000+xp..

again the bios is illegal to have as its warez i bet a few mods here may have played epsxe and they know the bios is warez so please dont ask about it again in this topic..
That is half right.....having the PSX BIOS is considered illegal and warez if you do NOT own the actual console itself....you can get the bios from your PS1 console that you OWN if you know how its done (I wont say it here), and I do not believe it's illegal to do so as long as you own the original console. Somewhat the same concept with games and DVD's that you can legally backup IF you own the originals. However if you ask for one and you dont own the console then that would be considered warez and illegal and should never be asked. Just wanted to clarify that.

I hope I am not in the wrong for saying that though (dont want to be struck down by the mod gods), but just want it to be known that its not totally bad to have from something that you OWN.

I have ePSXe and I like it alot too; it runs great on my system and plays most of my games pretty well. Only problem I had with it was with FFIX when the emulator crashed during the last FMV scene after I had beaten the final boss.

But since I still have my PS1 and 2 consoles, they will do just fine until the day they are dead completely. I think the NES and SNES emulators are good though, since the consoles themselves are nearly impossible to find (or find them in used questional condition on eBay) so that may be a viable option. I still have alot of my original NES and SNES cartridges and it would really suck if I am not able to ever play them again.

    VTM
