Hey I'm looking for an answer myself. I want to know if the BenQ 1625 is faster than the 1620. Hopefully someone answers.

It's been generally accepted around here that the LiteOn DVD-ROMs seem to consistently sustain the fastest rip speeds. I have a 167T and 166S, both firmware-flashed with firmwares from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and they can normally sustain anywhere between 6-12X on SL DVDs, and 6-10X on DL DVDs, maxing out at 15X on some DVDs.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Most DVD-ROMs rip at the same speed, though there are always exceptions. I have a Sony DDU1613 that works well and a older Toshiba SD-1212 that both rip at the same speed.

Here's a discussion thread about DVD-ROMs that mostly relates to bad media reading, but may give some useful information: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=261803&highlight=dvdrom

    can't say I have.

Just did an all-forums search on "fastest dvd-rom", and found these:

You'd think at least one of these threads might have some useful information.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  7. I think you need to use IE to view their page correctly.

  9. Stick with the answers at your post on CDfreaks. The 166 and 167 Liteons are discontinued, though either will do almost as well as the AOpen 1648 as long as you get the firmware from http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html
Still a few bugs in the system...

    I have one and it's fastVD-5=14x,DVD-9=8x
Get the hacked firmware and it can rip a DVDR at 14x.

  11. There is a black sony model at newegg, I'll look up the link when I get the chance, that happens to be a rebadged Lite-on 167T if thats what you are looking for. The newegg ratings on the newer lite-on drives are not nearly as good as the older ones. Not that that means a great deal.

  12. The Aopen 1648 is faster than any of the Liteons. I've got a Liteon 163 and it's quick, although my hacked Benq 822 is a little faster.
