We could only hope that the final design looks this nice. In reality it will be gigantic, unwieldy, with controllers the size of tommy guns.

No no. That's the unit that hangs off the bottom of the controller. Y'know, ergonomic.

Hi,
Sleek looking.
Is it going to have tivo capabilities???
KevinDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Yes, it will have tivo-like capabilities. But only if you subscribe to XBOX-360Live, and even then it will only work as well as MS's Media Center DVR, which is to say it'll crash halfway through E.R. every thursday night. Without fail.
-
Hi,
Thanks gurm. Actually won't you be able to use it like an old vcr by manually programming it??? I know that the TIVO will work alone without the subscription service.
Kevin
---though if I do end up buying the new xbox I will no doubt by the Live service!---
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Well, maybe you could but I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to keep you from doing so.
And even if you could, there's nothing to prevent it from crashing like a busload of the elderly with a narcoleptic driver. -
After the total hash they made of marketing the original
X-Box, I'll be surprised if they do anything that makes the
new one non-standard, such as wireless controllers. If
anything, I expect that the marketing goons at Mickeysoft
will be having a lot of serious talks with the game developers
in Japan. I know I won't be buying the new X-Box unless a
Resident Evil game is made available on it. I feel like such a
complete sucker after the original."It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..." -
More proof that Microsoft is not able to design anything original. How special for the original X-BOX they came up with a new case to put a really slow sub standard PC in. The next iteration of X-BOX will be awesome. I particulary am impressed by the fact that it lacks backwards compatability and that it has a cheesy ATI GPU. WAY TO GO MICROSOFT!!
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question! -
I still perfer PS2, I just can't find as many good games for Xbox plus, I hate Microsoft anyway.
LOL
I can't wait for the PS3 to come out!!!!!!!!!

Not saying this isn't the design, but "proof" is a pretty useless word right now.
The original X-box, when it came out 4 years ago, was actually a not too
sub-standard PC, but was the one of the BEST consoles on the market,
pretty hard to say it sucked when you can compare it to one other console.
What constitues a cheesy GPU? Does it make bad jokes, or is it unable to
give women good pickup lines?
Who said it lacks backwards compatibility? Other message board posts
don't count as credible sources.
I'm not flaming, just questioning the answers. -
The original X-box, when it came out 4 years ago, was actually a not too
sub-standard PC, but was the one of the BEST consoles on the market,
whether a console lives or dies is not how well-specified
it is. It is a question of how much software support it has
from the companies who make the games people want to
play. Which is why the PlayStations basically rule the roost.
Instead of half-baked ideas about how the game industry
should work, Sony has presented a lot of time talking with
the companies who make the games, and figuring out how
best to deliver something said companies can work with.
Although it is kind of amusing to see people whine about
how the X-Box controllers are "too large", in this age
where people with normal-sized fingers cannot operate
a mobile phone comfortably."It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..." -
PS3 is going to lay the smack down on xbox again. Read the link:

maybe even give the PC a run for it's $$. -
If the trends of the past in the console market are repeated,
it will start out expensive and slowly get knocked down to
more reasonable prices. I am guessing about $700 or so
in Australia before going down to about $350 the following
year. I don't know about US prices. Sony did exactly the same
thing with the PS2 when it first came out, though.
The usual strategy is to eat a certain amount with every
console sold, then make it up with software or peripheral
sales. This is what Mickeysoft tried with the original X-Box,
but then they figured out that for this to work, they actually
had to have games people wanted to play."It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..." -

As far as the lack of backwards compatability, I have read multiple press releases from Microsoft saying that backwards compatability was the least of their concerns with this system. As for my statements being unfounded, not quite. There is a reason why it is by FAR the second place seller in the console market.
I also wonder why they have chosen to use a standard DVD drive and Power PC processors. Me personally, I don't think the PPC processors stand a chance against the cell. Anyway just my opinions. And don't worry didn't take your post as a flame. The real answer lies in completely understanding the question! -
The hardware specs impress young boys and allow them to have their masturbatory fantasies, but the truth is that it doesn't MATTER what the hardware specs are. The games will still suck, just like the current set of games sucks.
And none of that matters compared to marketing. Sony just wins hands-down. Most games, best marketing, etc.
The Gamecube is the best current-gen system, hardware-wise. It's got the best graphics chip, best controls, and best hardware integration. But you know what? Nobody wants little mini-DVD games when they can have full-DVD cinematics on the other systems. It's been completely held back because Nintendo misjudged their audience. But it STILL outsells the XBox in other countries, because the games are MUCH MUCH MUCH better.
XBox has a few compelling games, but frankly I can wait to play Halo on the PC - FPS games are better on the PC anyway.
