  1. Getting my 1st mac and want to use it as a sorta portable movie player.

    I normally use a PC w/ following codec files/packs
    Divx 3.11
    Divx 4
    Divx 5
    Xvid 1
    Nimo Codec Pack
    Tsunami
    Vfapi
    ffdshow
    real alternative

I am trying to find mac install files for these or @ least the mac equivilant for each file

    I am running MAC OSX 10.3 on a G3 600mhz ibook

Good choice, video is much more hassle free with Mac, you don't need really codec packs and therefore, nothing is going to be broken. Most codecs come with OS, for rest, check links...

    Everything you really need (VLC):
    www.videolan.org/vlc/

    If you want encode:
    www.3ivx.com/

For weird proprietary Micro$soft Windows Media stuff, use Media Player for OSX, from M$-site (per session links). Pretty bad piece of software, IMHO and mostly useless, if you use VLC..

    And of course,
    www.divx.com,
but 3ivx does actually much the same.

XVID can be played by VLC, i think also NIMO.
Don't know about FFDSHOW--it seems like it is just a decoding filter.....
VLC would pretty much do what it does.....

  5. Vlc does play xvid, but i still need the xvid codec installed for it to understand...do you know where I can get a mac version of the xvid codec.

Also Nimo is a just a pack of various codecs all bundled togethor so if you install it installs whole bunch of codecs

VLC handles all decoding internally. It doesn't need installation of additional codecs, nor does it have support for it (in contrast with QuickTime).

As everyone keeps telling you, VLC will handle almost everything, and YOU DON'T NEED TO INSTALL ANY CODECS for it to work. Everything is built in.

MplayerOSX is an other player that will handle most anything you throw at it. Again, no additional codecs are needed. Everything is built in.

Now, if that's still not good enough for you, and you still have the need to install codecs, then Quicktime is for you. Install these 4 codecs, and you should be able to play most formats through Quicktime:

    DivX
    3ivX
    AC3
    Quicktime MPEG 2 Component

All of these are available at VersionTracker. The Quicktime MPEG 2 Component will cost you $19.95, but the other 3 are free. Good luck.
