  1. I'm not sure which forum this should go under, so I'll give it a shot here...

I'm using an ATI 9600XT, running cable TV signal into the card to facilitate caps and such...the splitter provided w/the card has outputs for 2 monitors and/or one television. I have one monitor hooked up to the card and have the TV output connected to a color TV's composite input.

I've gone through the ATI documentation, which more or less sucks, and I can't seem to figure out the answer to the following question:

How do I set the damn thing up so that I can view the cable TV signal on the television set, but NOT have it also show up on the monitor? Is there any way to "assign" which screen (monitor or TV) the picture is sent to?

Thanks, and apologies in advance if this (probably dumb) question was covered elsewhere...

    yes
i'm at work right now, so this is from memory.....
right click your desktop and go to Properties
in the "Display Properties" dialog box, click Settings > Advanced > Displays
there should be icons for each display (TV, monitor, FDP, etc) with buttons below each
one looks like a Power button, I can't remember what the other looks like tho
make sure that the "Power" button is clicked "ON" for your TV and the other button is clicked "ON" for the monitor
if the "Power" button is "ON" for both displays, they will 'mirror' each other -- that is, show the same thing
the other button is to basically assign a display as a 2ndary

alternatively, just turn the PC monitor off

  3. Thanks Xylob...but do I undestand correctly? If I hit that "On" button for both the monitor and the TV, then both the Monitor and the Television will show the TV picture? Well that's certainly half the battle...but if I don't want it to show on the monitor, do I switch the monitor button to "off"? And if I do, does that mean there will be no picture on the monitor at all (i.e., a black screen)?

What I'd really like to do is have the incoming cable TV signal displayed on the TV set, but have my windows desktop still show on the monitor.

The other reason I'm trying to figure this out is for when I do video editing with a program like Premiere. I would like to have the NLE up on my desktop but be able to watch the preview of the edit on the TV set...the default method is using a DV out from firewire to send a signal to a TV set but that's a) more clutter and b) not always accurate (gamma is off, black levels, etc, even when using a DV box or camcorder) so I would really like to be able to send the monitor and the TV set two discreet signals. Is there any way to do that?

P.S. I'm at work too, or so they tell me, lol...

  4. Not dumb question, actually what you are trying to do is smart- I'd like to try a similar set up.

Can't really answer your question at the moment but might it not be an overlay issue and where you want it displayed?

What you want is not within the specs of the card. You need an NLE realtime card with multi outputs for that kind setup.

Because the computer is outputting progressive video to an interlaced device, it's only good for a "sort of" preview, and that's it.

I don't know how the 9600 works but my AIW VE card uses the catalyst software's TV tuner to see the cable signal on my monitor.

I don't have my TV hooked up to my PC now but when I did, I had to contact ATI support to figure out how to see the video out on my TV without seeing my desktop on the TV also. Seems like it had something to do with overlay and like others mentioned, having both the TV and monitor activated under display properties.
I would contact ATI support by e-mail to get help with your problem.

Here is an online manual for your card if you want to check it out. It might have some answers for you also.

I ain't sure ( I ain't all set up right now) But try something like this. Set your monitor and TV up in properties as an extended desktop. Then drag the program showing the TV station over to the TV portion of the desktop (your TV monitor). You may have to change the settings to get it to show up. I have done this with an ATIAIW 7500 card but I don't really remember what the input was or what programs I was using (The results were not that good) I think I had to change the (WFM)? setteings.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?
