I'd impose this question at Doom9 but apparently you now have to wait 5 days after you join the forums to be able to post anything, so here goes:
I was attempting to convert a DVD compliant mpeg to SVCD with DVD2SVCD as I usually do, but it seems to balk at the process if the bitrate is really high, over 9 MBPS. This doesn't happen when I use lower bitrates to record with (under 6 MBPS). I've spent the last 24 hours attempting to convert a 44 minute video file. The first time, I had a hard system crash. Rebooted and restarted (now this is a big misnomer as it restarts from the beginning and not from where the crash took place), leaving all other settings the same. I checked some time later and it seems to want to convert to 2 CDs though the setting is clearly 1 CD if under 50 minutes. Okay, I let it do it's thing for 8 hours (PIII) and it crashes because it runs out of HDD space (before writing anything to the HDD!). Okay, restart from the beginning and it does it's thing but now it wants to convert to 3 CDs! I can't figure out what the !@#$ is going on. This time it got to 48% of the conversion and 4 Gig left on the drive before crashing. Anyone else have problems with this program?
Here is the log file:

Another thing that is problematic is the step of converting an Mpeg file to avi before converting to SVCD Mpeg. Wouldn't it be more efficient to stay within the container format, in this case, Mpeg 2? The time savings has got to be tremendous when doing that.
Oh well, time to erase the entire batch and try one more time. If it doesn't work, then I'll have to give up this software.

you have very little space in fact .. in fact it looks like you may of run out (doing pulldown) as you only had 80meg before pulldown and you will 1.6Gb at that point still ..
really overworking a p3 1ghz for this ..
the input bit rate should not mater .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I freed up 5.6 Gig on another drive and tried again using exactly the same settings. Result: perfect conversion in 3 hours! I guess one drive is faulty. That still doesn't explain the poorly thought out recovery mode. It should recover from the point of the crash, not start over from the beginning. It also doesn't explain why on recovery it simply must redo the audio when the file is clearly listed as being completed. Apparently, using the crash recovery section, you must uncheck several settings. That SHOULD be automatic and not up to the user. I guess it'll be a bit before I send more $$ the author's way as this stuff still has too many warts to make it usuable on my system. The absolute use of programs to convert mpegs to avis and then back to mpegs should also be rethought out. It's just too much a waste of time and resources.
P4 power money isn't available to me and building piece meal is out of the question, so I HAVE to stick with the PIII. -
nothing is being converted to avi's ... it is all frame served ..

I stand corrected. Any idea where I can get an encoder that will handle native Mpeg 2 DVD format and convert it directly to Mpeg 2 SVCD format? This would be much speedier for my purposes than frameserving to Vdub or other programs. I don't use filtering but I can see where this would be helpful for those using avi containers, since you are staying in avi parameters. I'm not, so the frameserving doesn't do me much good and it slows everything down to a crawl. A good transcoder program should do this, free or not doesn't matter, so long as it does what I want it to do.
