I want to connect my video to my computer so that i can make a copy of one of my old videos and then put it on a disc for safe keeping.

No, you need a capture card.

Do you want to make DVD?

  4. You should really put it on a dvd for safe keeping. I wouldn't archive anything of value to hard drive- they fail too often. [imo]

If your video were DV (such as the video recorded by digital cams), you could capture it through a simple firewire card (cheap). Since you video is analog (you mention VCR), you must capture it as AVI or MPEG2 with an analog capture card such as the ones made by Pinnacle. Capturing as AVI has some advantages and disadvanteges. One of the advantages is that the file can be much easier edited later. The drawback is that you'll need lots of space on your HD.
