  1. I just purchased a JVC grd27ou camcorder. I am interested in making dvd's from the video. I have a hauppauge tv tuner pci card with hardware mpeg encoding. Does anyone know of capture software that would allow me to capture the dv through the card as an mpeg for later dvd authoring. Most of the capture programs seem to be for capturing avi through a firewire connection, I would like to avoid this in order to save a step of re encoding. Any input would be appreciated.

  2. I use the software winTV2000 that came with my Hauppauge pvr150 if I want to capture from it.
But of course you have to use the SVideo, or Composite RCA jacks(all analog) from you DV cam, not the firewire(IEEE1394) connector(digital).

Haven't found a way to do what you want, and I think what your asking is hook the camera to the computer with the DV connector, and somehow feed that internally to the PVR150 for hardware encoding to MPEG2.

That would be nice if there was a way, but I get much better results with a software encoding of DV material, of course at the expense of time and hard drive space.

Try doing an Svideo out of DV cam into PVR150(remember audio is on a seperate cable that needs to also be hooked up to back of PVR150) and see if the results are acceptable, my guess is it'll come out really good.

Before you invest a lot of time in capturing, try a 15 minute test first to verify that the resulting mpeg's A & V are in sync. There have been issues reported with the separate inputs on the 150 and 250 cards although the coax input works fine. Assuming this works fine for you, the Hauppauge software captures just fine. Try to keep to the best or better quality settings (for 1 or 2 hour DVDs). My authoring software of choice is TMPGenc DVD Author; not expensive and works well (and is easy). If you need to cram more than that onto a DVD, capture at best (yes, best), author in TMPGenc DVD Author, let it proceed when it tells you that it won't fit, and use DVD Shrink to bring it back down to the necessary size. (I'm assuming you are not using dual-layer DVDs yet.)

  4. Thanks,
My Hauppauge didn't come with any software, hopefully I can get a copy of the wintv from their site and I'll see if that works out.

Yes, get their free software. Their nanocosmos mpeg editor sucks but, hey, it's free. I've found the WinTV and Scheduler apps to work quite well even though the user interface is not as modern or as well thought out as the apps you might pay for.

  6. yea, that nanosomething is not very good, I've used TMPGENC mpeg cutter, and/or cutterman.

you don't need a capture card to capture DV.

Just plug the cam in the pc direct and you will get a DV file. Use WindowsMovie maker capture if you ave nothing better. DV is DV. Most use the Micrsoft DV codec anyway.
